Say that you say you act horribly to another person saying that you are better than them, say at a sport, and then you can't back it up and you end up loosing. Is there a word/words or a phrase that describes this?

Bluffing or lying comes to mind....pompous is also a word that jumps out at me....if you take this to the street - I am sure you might hear the words - "punked"...really, I am kidding with you - I am not sure that there are words to describe this situation. Obviously, someone is full of themselves and has an overactive imagination if they could not prove what they said. Many times we 'help' our cases by pumping ourselves up (boxers, and other competitive sport figures do it all the time). It's a mind thing to 'brag'. It increases the adrenalin in our systems and that increases blood to the heart and you feel a "rush" which helps the competitive spirit. Once you are in the active state of the competition, you have to keep 'talking to yourself" if you want to continue winning. A lot of times, people don't stay focused - and when you loose the focus, taking your mind off the 'winning' portion - you subject yourself to the loss of the competition.

hubris is a very old word with a long pedigree that descibes that, although arrogance and boastfulness certainly come into it. But, you can be arrogant and boastful even while performing exactly what you said you would perform, so those words don't exactly capture what you want, whereas the hubristic man is doomed to face his nemesis (the wrath of the gods and a punishment for hubris)..

certainly not narcississtic, that word has another meaning entirely.

failing to 'walk the talk' or something similar is probably the phrase you want.
