However, it is also a slang term for the following:
A woman singer.
An informer; a stool pigeon.
A sweet white wine from the Canary Islands, similar to Madeira.
A light to moderate or vivid yellow.
And, there is also Canary Wharf, a large business development on the Isle of Dogs, centred on the old West India Docks in the London Docklands (in England).
Then there is Canary Row, a 1945 John Steinbeck novel.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist a little humour; the name of the novel is really Cannery Row, a good book that you should consider reading.

the name origins from canis lat. means big dog.
King Juba from Mauritanian got his big dogs from those islands, it was about 50 BC when they started to call them the Canary Islands.
