Many couples who use the rhythm method to prevent pregnancy end up pregnant because it is impossible to predict when a woman will release an egg.
The average woman is fertile for only 6 days out of her 28-day cycle. An egg can live only one day after it is released, while the longest sperm can live in the vagina is five days. A woman's cycle is dated from the first day of menstruation. An interesting study in this month's British Medical Journal shows that only about 30 percent of women release their eggs to make them fertile from day 10 to 17. Even in women with regular repeatable menstrual cycles, most women reach their fertile days earlier and many much later. Because of this extreme variability in egg release, most women need more than the rhythm method to prevent pregnancy.

If you have a 28 day cycle, you will generally ovulate on day 14. If you have a 35 day cycle, you will ovulate on day 21. In other words, the first part of the cycle (prior to ovulation) is where the variation is. You will, as a rule, begin your period 14 days after you ovulate, if the egg is not fertilized.
Sperm live 72 hours (the best swimmers usually give up at about 48 hours, however) and the egg about 48.
So, based on a 28 day cycle, if you have intercourse on day 12, and ovulate on day 14, you can get pregnant. If you ovulate on day 14, have intercourse on day 16, you can get pregnant. If you are lucky, and the sperm are REALLY good swimmers, you could get pregnant as early as day 11, all the way through day 16-17.
So that gives you about 5-6 days/month you might find yourself fertile!

There are times during the month when a woman is thought to be MORE fertile... but a woman can get pregnant at any time of the month. Sometimes it's difficult to accurately pinpoint her most fertile days.

Although women have a few days a month were they are fertil, they can still get pregnant if they don't have sex on those days. How you may ask. Sperm can live up to 72 hours, so if you have sex 3 days before you ovulate, you can still technically end up pregnant if that sperm makes it to the egg.

for a very very NORMAL cycle. SUPPOSELY there are only certain days that a girl can get pregnant. but the problem is that not many girls have that normal of a cycle so its hard to know which days are the fertile ones and how many there are.

there are actually 4 days during a womans cycle that she is most fertile--days 14-18
having sex on those days is a good possibilty for a baby.
if you want or dont want a baby-be sure to keep track of those days.
(cycle day 1 is the first day of period)

there are three days that you are at the peak of fertility, but you can get pregnant any time, even on your period so if you dont want a pregnancy always use a condom.
