He is still the best bowler in the world. He should not retire right now. The Australian bench strength is still not good enough to continue his legacy.

I opine differently than other answerers. The talent and skill ought to be used to the maximum. It is just like wine which you drink to the bottom.
Moreover, you are playing for the nation and that means you owe it to the nation that you should contribute to the fullest till the last.

I find that one bowler in the Australian bench is Johnson who looks pretty good. I am impressed with Stuart Clarke. His line and length resembles that of McGrath. To me Clarke would take over.

Further, I have been watching Bret Lee since he started his career and he has played alongside McGrath but he has not learnt the tricks of McGrath. He is struggling with his form and is being taken for runs quite too often.

Still, I have a word of praise for McGrath. One single quality of his bowling is: He keeps the ball on or just outside off stump. He brings in the odd boall in and that ducks the batsmen.
His beauty lies in planning his wickets. Youngesters need to learn from him that keep your basics right. Throughout his career he believed in himself and never changed his action or style of bowling.

Tremendous cricketer. His farewell will be better than Steve Waugh. It would be a great occasion when the three pillars of Australian cricket bid farewell to the game in one go. I wish them all the best in their future endeavor. I hope cricket lovers recall the wonderful farewell given to Steve Waugh. I further hope the Australian cricket board plans and executes the farewell of those three.

It is very difficult for a fast bowler to be fit forever and continue with lot of consistency in the world of cricket. That too, playing regularly for a team like Australia, it is even difficult. Though he is still the best bowler in the world, he is facing the fitness problems. For the last 2 years, he is in and out of Australian team because of his injuries. May be this is the reason why he is quitting the game. Further, great players would love to quit the game while in prime. The Australian reserve bench as far as fast bowling is concerned, it is good enough to challenge the rest of the world. Australia is weakened only in department of Spin because of the vaccum going to be created by Shane Warne's retirement.

Becuase he wants to go out on top!! The next test series isn't until next summer, and he wants to be able to play his last match in front of his home crowd!!

Imagine if you were planning to play your last match, after a magnificent career, and you were struck down with injury and you never recovered! You would miss a chance to say goodbye.

That's why I was surprised when Martyn called it quits, and didn't even finish playing the series. I'm sure he wouldn't have been dropped, and could've said goodbye as well.

Australia's fast bowling talent is very exciting. Every other country will be thinking after Mcgrath retires, everything will become easier, But look at the talent:

Tait
Johnson
Watson
Edmonson
Magoffin
Geeves
Hilfenhaus
Drew

There are so many players coming through! 2011 World Cup, watch out!!

I think it has more to do with him reflecting on his life, and how much time he spends away from his unwell wife. She has been unwell for some time, relapsing last year, and I think he realised he wanted more time to care for her, and be by her side in her times of need.
On top of that factor, he would only probably have 1-2 years left anyway, and most nations look for a period of "refreshment" following the world cup in order to rebuild for the following tournament. McGrath would have no chance of 2011, so he probably felt it was better to go out now on his own terms, than be dumped sometime in the next 12 months.

While Mc Grath is still a very good bowler, he is not in his prime form. Hence he followed the saying that "stop singing when the voice is good.", so that he can gracefully retire when he is in form rather than retiring when people start criticising him if he fails to perform well in future.

It's obivious to fall one day, and it will be horrible to face the situation. So this is right time to quit to become the best target for new comers.
