Some of the best advice I can give is Folic Acid...the minute you decide that you're TTC...start it.
Are you a smoker? If so (and doin't take offense) STOP...not only will it lead to a healthier environment for baby to grow in...but smoking actually decreases your ability to concieve. (and no...not going to get on a soap box about the damage it does...blah blah blah...everyone already knows the damage that can be done)
Are you a drinker? I think you know where I'm going with this one too...alcohol, responsibly enjoyed, is fine...but be aware of the effects that alcohol has on your body (not talking about the effect of getting falling down drunk...talking about on the blood & cells of the body) the cells that are responsible for creating life...probably work best without a whole lot of alcohol exposure. (add to this that if you're drinking (no matter how responsibly) and do get that positive pregnancy test...the guilt that will be tagged onto those few responsible drinks "before you knew" really isn't worth it.
Look over your diet...are there ways you can maximize the better foods and minimise (or moderate) the foods that are empty calories. While examining your diet don't avoid what you drink. Most people never think twice about what they drink (even some that are "conscious" about what they eat) because we as a society drink on the go, but not always rationalize what it is we're drinking...usually comes down to what's easiest. Caffiene needs to be limited (not only during pregnancy...but pre-pregnancy it can lead to easier conception)
Water...increase it as much as you comfortably can. I hated water...but after three pregnancies i've gotten to where I really don't mind it.
If you and your significant other are simply TTC and as such have no known fertility issues these are probably most of what you would need to consider, however if you and/or your significant other are fertility challenged speak to a fertility clinic, for suggestions. they know, they've dealt with ALL of it before.
The only other thing I would suggest is find a good TTC website...I know that sounds wierd...but it really DOES help to be talking to thousands of women who are going through the exact same thing. the support is phenominal, but also information that I got from a lot of the mothers that have "been there" made things so much easier. things that I was stressing about as a first time mom, I could bring up there...and if enough people advised that it was a valid concern then I gave it more thought, and perhaps talked things over with my OB/GYN at my next visit...but at the same time if there were enough people telling me that whatever I was going through or feeling was "normal" then I was able to relax and enjoy the pregnancy. If you want a good site I'll give you the web addy...just mail me.
Last snippet of advice...when with your partner...RELAX...enjoy each other, don't let your relationship become "all about conception" which can happen easily, and is hard on you both. Besides...once baby comes...time together to just enjoy each other's company, etc. yeah...that'll be at a premium...hehehe.

A person would never spend thousands of dollars for beautiful race horse if it were bred from a poorly fed female and sire. So you will want to eat protein every meal along with good vegetables, staying away from sugar, smoke and alcohol. You will want the father to do the same.

Another thing that most answers were missing is to exercise! Staying in shape will keep your body a lot healthier during and after the pregnancy. You will want to gain weight during the pregnancy but you don't want your body to balloon due to lack of strenuous exercises. Good luck!

Cut out alcohol, smoking, and drugs. Prescribed meds should be remote. Avoid caffeine. Eat healthy balanced meals, exercise regularly, drink lots of fluids. Have a lot of sex. Make sure that you are ovulating. Take pre-natal vitamins.
