Yes fine, no damge can be caused so long as the engine is running. However, damage occurs when you shift from neutral to Drive while the car is going at speed. This causes the gearing AND engine some stress as it attempts to compensate for your instruction i.e. travelling 80k then slamming it into 1st 2nd 3rd or Drive.

If you downshift at high speeds you could possibly overspeed the engine or damage the transmission or possibly even break a motor mount. You don't want to do 65mph in L gear or maybe even 2 gear. But other than that, you won't cause any damage. The gear you select on the shift lever is the highest gear you are allowing the transmission to shift into. When you start from a dead stop, the transmission always starts in L gear regardless of which forward gear you have selected. Then as engine load and vehicle speed change, the transmission will automatically upshift into the next gear until it reaches the gear you have selected.

this is a commen question its no a good practice to get into because when the auto is in drive the oil pump in the tranmission is pumping oil around the trannie but when in neutral there is no oil being pumped around which in turn means all the clutch packs on have splash oil feeding them when you engage drive you need to pump more oil around the trannie in that being said not a good idea no advantaged gained or fuel saved plus you have no bracking effect in the trannie you need to rely on the brakes so you wear out the brake pads
