I know there's going to be a Wolverine spin-off movie, but what about a fourth X movie? There were waaaay too many teasers in X-3 for there not to be. Plus Jean and Cyclops can't be killed, Magneto's regaining his powers and where the hell is Nightcrawler?

Fox Films Entertainment Chairman Tom Rothman stated The Last Stand is the end of a trilogy, but not necessarily the end of the X-Men film series: "These three movies work as a trilogy. These characters in this relationship, it's the culmination of that saga. It's the culmination and the resolution of those relationships laid out in the first two movies".[30] Earlier, in a February 14, 2006 interview, Ratner said, "We wanted to make sure the audiences knew that this was a trilogy. Even though they weren't made together like Lord of the Rings, this is really closure for the X-Men series...This is the last stand for sure". In the same interview, a 20th Century Fox spokesperson confirmed The Last Stand is the final foreseeable installment for the X-Men team, but there are possibilities for X-Men 4.[31] Brett Ratner has stated he would like to return for a sequel, but probably not before finishing work on Rush Hour 3.[32]

Executive producer Avi Arad stated in an interview that Marvel would take its time to decide what to do with future X-Men films, but is focusing on the spin-offs.[33] A Wolverine spin-off[34] and a Magneto spin-off[35] have been announced and are in the scripting stages. Other possible movies based on the characters of Mystique and Emma Frost are also being developed. Three Kings director David O. Russell was contacted about creating a story for the character. A possible film based on the students at the school has also been mentioned.[36]

In an early November 2006 interview, Bryan Singer, the director who started the franchise, confirmed that two more direct sequels are in development, and though he had been approached to direct one or both of the films, he would not be able to do so until after completing production on a sequel to Superman Returns. [37] Singer also confirmed production on the Wolverine spin-off, expressing interest in directing the film. Actor Hugh Jackman confirmed that Singer was also the first choice to direct, barring any major scheduling conflicts with the Superman sequel.[38] It appears following the trilogy Marvel may want to reclaim the rights to make the films their own, as with the Iron Man film.[39]

Actually, Jean is quite likely very, very dead. However, Marvel has a really annoying habit of pulling out ways to revive their dead characters or otherwise bring back nearly identical versions. For instance, although when the comics were first done for the Dark Phoenix saga, and Jean was vaporized by a blaster turret on the moon (long story, but worth a read), it was Jean that died. However, when they later decided to bring back the character they decided that it wasn't actually her at all, but a re-creation of her made by the Phoenix entity, and the real Jean had been at the bottom of the river where she first "became" Phoenix the whole time.
Hopefully the films will not tread this path, because doing so would completely ruin the drama of Wolverine having to kill the woman he loves in order to save the world. As to Cyclops, I was quite surprised when they killed him off, but considering that the actor was involved in other projects it isn't too much of a surprise.
However, consider this: Phoenix was capable of manipulating reality. We do not know if she re-created Cyclops as a dying act or something like that. After all, her original personality was in love with him, so it is not impossible that the original personality could have affected the dominant, Phoenix persona and caused that to happen. If they really wanted to bring back Cyclops, they could. And they have already set the stage for bringing back the Professor, although perhaps in a different body.
Another thing to consider: if Magneto is getting his powers back, might Mystique also be recovering? She's going to be mighty pissed about what happened...
Of course, from a non-story viewpoint, you can pretty much count on them milking a successful franchise for all it is worth. We will continue to see X-Men movies and spin-off movies until they stop being profitable. I would be very surprised if there wasn't another movie, if not X-Men then perhaps X-Force or X-Calibur or any of the other X-fill-in-the-blank things that they did in the comics. What I'd really like to see, though, that I was so disappointed was just a danger room sequence in the 3rd film, is Days of Future Past done as a movie. Now that would be cool.

I am pretty sure the next project for X-men is the Wolverine solo spin off. That will be interesting. Spiderman 3 is what I am waiting for >:))
