>> Re "On checking the speeds in the control panel, it states that the L.A.C connection is running at 100.0 Mbps and the 1394 connection is running at 400.0 Mbps." << cheltenham4
The "control panel" speeds are not accurate. It is much like going to "Add or Remove Programs" via the Control Panel and noticing that software that you always use is listed as "Used Rarely " In any case, I might be able to help you here with your Internet Access Speed" problem by suggestion two software programs, which might help...
CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition
http://www.lavasoft.de/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
CCleaner may help you by removing the practically useless (from the users point of view) cookies and other files which accumulate as you navigate the web. These types of files are stored on your computer in order to basically do the following things while you surf around on the web...
The cookies are "Text files" downloaded onto a website visitor's computer hard drive in order to "store the visitor's actions" and then to better utilize and "customize" their consequent visits to that same website.
Like when you go to your Bank account online "sign in" and switch to the next page - the computer knows it's STILL YOU (and not someone trying to hack into your account). Other examples are login or registration information, online “shopping cart” information, user preferences, etc. Cookies can be "read" by that Web site on the next visit and let you continue shopping (or posting your question on this board, etc)
The down side (on the "user end") is that these files "in abundance" can make Internet navigation slower, because it takes longer and longer for the websites to "find" the cookie that's stored there when there are many Megabytes or even more to "search through."
That's why CCleaner (which used to be called Crap Cleaner) is such a useful program - it cleans out cookies and other useless files. After you are done browsing the Internet for the day and are say, no longer shopping at a website or no longer registered here at yahoo - by signing in, I mean - these files become less useful and continue to add up, CCleaner gets rid of this accumulation according to the checkmarks that you either allow or "uncheck" prior to running the CCleaner tool.
Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition is to check for spyware and adware which are malware downloads from irreputable sites that (covertly) want you to see their "popup" advertisements 24/7 or perhaps want to "steal a bit" of your bandwidth which; of course slows down your surfing while the malware is studying where you go and attempting to "pop-up" relevant ads.
Anyhow, run those two programs and post back to tell us if you see any improvement...
Note: CCleaner is FREEWARE, which means it is a fully functional program available at no cost to the user. Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition is the free but lesser version of Ad-Aware SE Professional Edition, which offers a few more options.
Incidentally, this site will accurately measure your exact "broadband" speed: CNet Bandwidth Meter speed test: http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html
Note: Be sure to save that CNet site to "favorites" so that you can check it before as well as AFTER you try the program suggestions which I listed to see if your speed increases. :)
Good Luck!

If the L.A.C is running at 100.0 then its up to high. When you open control panel and go to network connections, highlight the L.A.C. And on the left stuff will pop up. The you want to click change settings of this connection. The general tab will be open. And under connect using to the right, it will say configure (click the configure button). Then click the tab that says Advanced, then highlight Link Speed/Duplex Mode. And on the left under were it says Value: Click the arrow and pick Auto Negotiation. Then click ok to save it then close it. And restart your computer because once you make a change with the system you need to restart your computer.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that their broadband internet connection will help the overall performance of their computer. When I get to a job site, I have people complain that their computer boots up so slowly and they don't understand why since they have cable internet. Your internet connection will only affect your wait time while surfing the web or checking e-mail. Most of the other lag comes from an outdated or overstuffed computer to put it in lay terms.
As far as your local area connection goes: Your cable modem is connected through your computer usually through your local area connection. However, your cable internet connection is most likely capped out at 6-8Mbps. This would be like driving on a road with a speed limit of 100Mph, but your ride (connection) maxes out at 6-8Mph. There is not much you can do about it.
To check your INTERNET CONNECTION THROUGHPUT, go to http://www.speedtest.net. This is a really neat site that will show you your throughput for the internet.
I must stress that you internet connection could be fine, instead you computer itself could be slow.

Your computer might be running slow even though the internet broadband connection is running fast.
Even though you're seeing 100Mbps for your ethernet connection, that only has to do with the connection between your PC and the broadband modem you're using. Your modem, on the other hand, is connected at a much slower speed to the internet (probably somewhere around 2Mbps).
Keep in mind too, that Mbps stands for megabits per second. A file goes by megabytes not megabits, and there are 8 bits in 1 byte. Therefore, a 2Mbps high-speed connection is able to transfer at 250 kilobytes per second (KB/s).

The numbers shown in the control panel simply show the connection speed of the ethernet link from you computer to your router or modem.
To see your Internet speed - the speed that data is going to the modem check out:
http://www.dslreports.com/
Tools
Speed Tests.
There are several other tests that may be of use.
The Tweak Test is useful for fine tuning your internet connection.
Please note that as these tests send data to/from the USA, the result you get may be lower than you were expecting.
There are other speed tests available in the UK - such as
http://www.speedtest.net/
Hope this helps

First, there's no 300mbps for stressed. criteria are 10mbps, 100mbps and 1000mbps for stressed (ethernet) connections. That 300mbps should be an more advantageous instantaneous speed (speed advance). in case your broadband is 10mbps, any usual router or swap operating at 100mbps is more desirable than adequate...

100Mbps, is well, 100 mega bits for every second, but this is the connection to your ROUTER, not to the internet. Your connection speed t your router and to your internet though your modem is different. your download and upload speeds on the internet depend on your ISP (Internet service provider) and possibly your location.|
There are some tests you can do to find out your speed. Other thigns such as spyware may be slowing your speed down.

do a search on 'bandwidth Speedometer'. u get lots of sites doing the bandwidth check. try few of them. you are supposed to get atleast 80% of the bandwidth that is promised to u by the service provider.
check for viruses on your system or your firewall settings. these could be other causes of slow internet response.
