I don't usually go into questions that say "are conservatives this, or are liberals that"... but I thought I would dip into the mire...

but seriously... I've seen so many times where conservatives either don't believe something because it's not happening in their town or to someone they know...

the world is much larger than just you and your town... even larger than your state and country... and those things, if not dealt with, could one day affect YOU...

even when I ask a theoretical question, conservatives assume that the subject of the question is directly related to me... I ask a question about poverty, they tell me to get to work... when I have a job?

Sorry I see poor people from time to time and I stop and think about them? maybe even ask a question? but that's just one example that I've seen in many different questions...

but the true irony here is that many of them are religous and the golden rule basically directly speaks against this action?

Well, people are people and as you point out that not all Republicans are like this. I would venture to say that yes, some are, and yes some Democrats are as well. I've seen Republicans that are so far Right that it scares me to death, some really do have blinders on. I've also seen some Democrats that are so far left that it scares me too though. I'm not a Republican or a Democrat, but have voted for both depending upon which I believe is the better person for the job. Now, saying that, I'm also from Texas but when I say that to SOME Democrats they automatically assume I'm a Republican and start telling me what I think and how stupid I am for supporting Bush. Huh? I think people are people, I don't think you can or should pin labels or generalizations on somebody based upon what you believe. Lol, that is long winded and probably doesn't answer your question but I hope you see what I'm saying.

I used to consider myself to be pretty liberal minded. In some ways I still am. Lately though, I've grown really tired of the hateful rhetoric coming from the left. They'll often accuse conservatives of being closed minded, but then they seem to be just as closed minded if not more so, when asked to consider opposing points of view.
Is it possible that maybe people on the left and the right need to try and open their minds to new solutions?

About poverty...there are situations where people need help, and I hope they can find that help. But personal responsibility is important too. Not everybody that is poor is a victim.

To me a self-centered person is someone who won't consider anybody elses point of view but their own, won't put themselves in other people's shoes. I'm not really sure what I believe right now, but then I'm at least actively trying to educate myself, and looking for rational voices from both sides of the argument, and not just criticising people I don't see eye to eye with.

They are very self centered, generally speaking. They very much believe that the world revolves around them and all their friends with money. They lack a conscience, accountability, and a basic understanding that freedom of religion applies to people other than Christians. I am a Christian, I do not belong to any political party and I am sure that Jesus would not hang out with most conservative Christians. They are liars and master manipulators, evident proof of that is taking place in Iraq. The world will not tolerate this single minded behavior much longer, as most nations have grown weary of our "we know better than you" attitude. There are good Republicans, very few, but they blindly sit by and support the rich, spoiled brat kid antics of our much maligned President. It's one thing to be a Republican, and it's quite another to sit back and let one man ruin the worldwide reputation of each and every citizen of this great country.

It seems to be so, and allow me to explain.
I know in the heartland and abroad of our country, people are less fortunate than let's say...6 years ago. It is a colossal mess what our administration has turned Iraq and Afghanistan into. If that isn't enough to get upset with the government, then the republicans just have their standards set FAR too low.

Conservatives are generally individualistic, believing in helping yourself, success through hard work, and not relying on government handouts. However, this attitude of fending for yourself can sometimes grow into being only concerned with your own welfare, or being self centered.

Just as the idea of working together as a community and helping others, can lead to dependency issues and laziness amongst people.

it would seem that way.

they consistently vote down any increases to minimum wage.
they want to privatize soc. sec. this would have an adverse effect on the lower income citizens.
they are completely against a universal health care plan that would provide affordable health care to all Americans.
they want to do away with the estate tax.... you now only pay this if your estate is over 2 million....

I'm not sure they are self centered. However I think many on the right are very desperate for vindication of their views. They have spent decades now arguing strenuously that they are "fiscally conservative" and the party of national security. Turns out, you give the GOP power and they bankrupt the country with tax cuts and wars of choice that make the country less secure. Its really hard to admit to that level of failure.

People as a rule are selfish! It was not always like this in this country either. over-indulgent parents have certainly contributed much to this unseemly trait!

Too hard to pinpoint--but your rationale is very prudent. Look at the chick who referred to her thoughts about poor people rather than deciding to actually go and talk to the person and find out for herself. A total act of self-centeredness through denial. Typical.
