All my systems feature the AMD Athlon chip of some kind... The 64 bit will give you more power than the P4 and the scale you're looking at. Get the 939 socket AMD Athlon 64 you'll be surprised!

Ah, the age old question > Pentium or AMD (Cyrix686 FTW - lol)... back to your question. Pentium has made good use of its technologies in the 32bit Pentium 4 Chips, and they do top amd's current x64 lineup in that 32bit world. However, if its 64 bit software you got, along with 32bit software you need then AMD wins the race for versatility. Until 64bit apps become popular (wont be long with how cheap the chips are) I would stick with pentium4.... and all that comes from me (a person who runs an AMD64x2).

between low end P4's and low end AMD64's AMD64's for sure, but if you want to do a low end AMD 64, vs a P4 in comparable price, then it would depend what your doing.

Generally the rule between P4's and A64's its Intel for Multitasking and AMD For gaming, although it's not true with the new chips that are out, but it still applys towards the P4's and AMD64's

ATHLON 64 .... without hesitation.

With the AM2 940 socket ...not 939.
The 940 will accept upcoming quad-core processors should you wish to eventually go that route.

from my experience go with the lowend A64 as they have a much faster front side bus(1600-2000MHz vs 533-1066MHz) also AMD processors have on die memory controllers which make them slightly more efficient on the lowend. don't get me wrong Intel has an excellent highend product but if you are looking for more bang for your buck stick with AMD.
