For several years, this was my absolute favorite book. I read it in late elementary/early middle school. It is about a girl and her family living with her dying grandfather over the summer. L'engle adds a somewhat fatastical element of communication with dolphins as Vicky becomes romantically involved with a boy working at a marine biology center. There is a sequel called "Troubling a Star" that is also very good, though I liked "A Ring of Endless Light" better.

Since you are adults, I would bypass some of the suggestions you have been given and go to a great series. Try the Amber series by Roger Zelazney. You will both love it. MUCH more original than HP and much more intriguing characters. If I'm not mistaken -all ten books come in one great big volume now too. Also since Mr. Zelazney's untimely death, another author has written a few Amber books - not nearly as good but not bad. It is a great series. Pax - C

The book tells of a girl named Vicky and her struggle to understand life as she deals with her dying grandfather, while at the same time finding love.

Well...
I've never had the pleasure, I didn't even know it existed. But now that I know it does (and a big "Thank You!" for asking the question that lead me to it), it's going on my "To Read" list, as I've been a fan of her work for some time.
As far as your question, I'm not able to answer it myself, but here's anothers take on the subject:

Hope that helps...

I liked it. I read it in grade 6 so I barely remember it but It was about time travel or something, a different dimension type of thing. It was a good book. but not for 6th graders cause well, they have no attention span.
