A thinking being.

Sounds like cartesian equation to me.

Thinking what you are to justify yourself is to be self-assuming actually. Descartes did say it to assume that as long as you have thoughts, you are alive.

But I'm sure you can get that off any web search. It is just repharsing what someone said.

There is one loophole in the phrase though. Thoughts make the man only if he translate it into action. I'm sure you won't just stop at thinking, because computers and other people can do it for you.

Although we are different to animals because we rationalise, that is not true entirely. You can steal a grand from a bank and rationalise that it is okay because there are more money in the bank. That is animal instinct. You are doing something for yourself and thinking about your actions doesn't entirely make you human.

In the scheme of things you are nowhere, because you are not a thing...the the scheme of being you are the one who has concsiousness and according to the traditional philosophy we are the highest of all being in the world.

and it is has nothing to deal with cartezian hilosophy which assumes "cogito ergo sum", which means "I think, it means that I am" :)

I wholeheartedly agree with TellMeWhy? answer to your question. Indeed, the quote "I think, therefore, I am" is attributed from the French philosopher and mathematician Rene Descartes who essentially meant in one of his works that "I am a human being; therefore, I can think and rationalize unlike the likes of other animals."

Yup, you hit upon the fly in the ointment. Descartes' analysis doesn't go beyond proving mere existence in that particular essay, but now that you got me thinking, you can extrapolate some further information by combining with his other works. He would say you are a thinking creature created by God. That's the only other essay I studied in detail (proof of God's existence). If you get further, let me know.

The only thing I really know for sure is that I think, so therefore I am.

The question to ask yourself is, does it follow from "I think therefore I am" to "I think what I am, therefore I am that."

Sort of... That is part of a Popeye quote. ♪ "I am what I am, and that's all that I am, I'm Popeye the sailor man" ♫

I hope this helps set the "scheme" of things straight!
