Security. I could walk out at night without fear of being mugged or robbed in the street.
Financial. With only ten cents, I could buy food, drink, sweets and still have some left over to save or go to the cinema.
We can ride on bicycles on the street from one end of the city to the other or anywhere without fear of being knocked down by a car. There were no morons, drunkards and junkies driving in weapons of mass destruction they call automobiles or cars.

I hate to say it, but I don't really see the past as significantly better as the present. Both the present and the past have their advantages and disadvantages. I think people tend to idealize the past primarily because when they were children they had no idea how bad things really were in some respects, so in retrospect they imagine everything was perfect.

Nevertheless, there are a few things that were better in the 70's and 80's (during my childhood and teenage years):

1. Being able to run around freely outside
(These days, the large population, the increased amount of concrete in suburban areas, and the increased reporting of crimes against children, which may or may not be significantly higher as a percentage but certainly are reported more often, have all made us more protective of our own children, who don't get out as much as a result.)

2. The price of gas was lower, houses were more affordable, and a dollar went farther

3. Schools were smaller, and high school students weren't herded about like a bunch of cattle as they are now.

On the other hand, I really don't think music was any better back then. There are a few standout bands from the 60's and 70's who still hold their own, but there's a ton of excellent new music out these days in a variety of genres that didn't even exist back then! If you don't hear any music these days that you like, you're either stuck in a rut or you're just not listening to anything but the radio.

Likewise, I don't think marriages are truly any better, either. The average 1950's or 1960's couple may have seemed like the perfect couple because they put on a happy face and washed their hatred for each other away with their evening scotch on the rocks, but I imagine just as many people were trapped in miserable marriages back then as now. The main difference is that these days, women are able to work and earn a living on their own, so they're not forced to stay in a loveless, miserable marriage because they have no other choice.

And memories...how can one time period inspire better memories than another? Every decade has its own group of children who have wonderful childhood memories that will become the idealized memories of the future.

Disney World, Christmas, and the state of the world. People were more polite, children were more innocent, and the world seemed less chaotic and a lot safer. Music is a close fourth as long as were not talking 80's rock ( I don't miss the aqua net rock like Poison or Motley Crue)

My favorite things were....

1. Being able to wake up grandpa in the morning jumping on the bed giggling/helping in the garden.

2. summer vacations at the lake, when family had time to get together.

3. Not having to worry about kidnappings or strangers.

Just the trust, comfort, time, and friends that more likely to find with less effort.
