actually, only male beta do that. female dont fight as much. male fight becuase they cannot co-exist with another male in the same enviornment. they see each other as a threat of their territory and therefore fight with each other. that is why when you put a mirror in front of a beta, the beta will flare its gills like a cobra opens its hood. cool aint it?

btw if youre planning to keep betta do not keep beta in a bowl. beta cant actually LIVE in a bowl. they are barely surviving in it. a beta deserves a filtered aqaurium just like any other fish.

if you want to keep more than one, put a tank divider in and make two beta aquariums in one =DDDDD

Bettas are territorial fish. They fight for territory. You can't keep 2 males together unless you have a gigantic tank and lots of hiding places. Females can be just as violent as males though once the heiarchy is established, they will live peacefully. It's really mostly the fish's personality that governs how well they can live with each other, luck of the draw.

The male betas are the fighters. They fight with each other for territory and the right to mate.

Believe it or not it is possible to have more than one male beta in a tank, you just need adequate room, plant life and places to hide. With ample room and places to call their own and will defend it if others come too close.

So there you go.. have fun!

I have actually put about 5 males in together in a aquarium, they never did anything besides swim around. Can anyone confirm that they fight, or is this a urban legend? This was a 5 gallon tank, with no hiding places.

Betas don't like sharing their bowls or tanks with other fish. If you were to put a mirror behind their bowl they would attack it because they would think it was another fish.
