I installed a new dvd-rom(#2) and re-installed windows xp(sp2). I re-installed the drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled again, plugged keyboard and moniter in at different times etc. The same usb ports work fine with my printer and camera. I also went into the bios and enabled upnp. computer showed that they were working but when i plug them in and turn on computer the lights for the mouse come on until the boot screen then shut off and don't work. strange though, i could use the keyboard in the bios (although there were no lights working). Please Help

I hate the fact that many newer computer companies have removed the mouse and keyboard ports and are forcing people to use USB for their mouse and keyboards. I love USB for other things but not for the mouse and keyboards. Your wasting your time changing all these components around because Windows XP has a hard time allotting the resources for the mouse and keyboard under USB. All your other stuff is not the problem. The easiest way to solve your problem is, if you do have the older mouse and keyboard ports on the back of your computer, then put the rounded conversion plug over the USB plug on the end of your mouse and keyboard and plug into the back of your computer and I guarantee your problem will go away. If you have only a USB for your mouse and keyboard then get the company that made your computer on the ball to fix it as they are the idiots who choose to leave off the mouse and keyboard ports.

Edit update if you do not have the old style mouse and keyboard ports: One more thought. Buy a new USB PCI add on card that you install inside your computer. The USB add on PCI card will allot its own resorces. Xp has tight resorce control and is almost impossible to control. Otherwise you maybe forced to format and reload XP into your computer with all your nice new add ons (including your mouse and keyboard) plugged in while XP is loading. Reloading XP over the top of itself will not address your issue. You must reformat your hard drive and then install XP. Do this last bit of addvice only if you deside to not buy the USB PCI card. Sorry but I know of no other way.
