It's very smart of you to try to get your family healthier as well as yourself. Unfortunately, it's hard to get other people to change their habits. It's something that they have to want to do to succeed. Keep trying and I wish you luck with that.
On the other hand, it seems like you definitely would like to start getting healthier. Don't pay attention to all those fad diets on the market. Nothing works better than exercise and eating healthier.
Exercising for 30 minutes per day, five days weekly is a good start. Exercise also increases the "feel good me's" (endorphins) in your brain and gives you more energy. I particularely find that walking is an enjoyable way to exercise and it has worked for me. But everyone is different.
Eating habits are also something to look at. A good rule of thumb is to ALWAYS eat breakfast (it speeds up your metabolism) and stop eating after 8pm, try to only eat three healthy meals per day (they can be your regular meals, just watch your portions and don't go for seconds), completely cut out soda unless it's diet (regular soda is just empty calories) and try to eat more fruit for snacks instead of chips or candy. We don't have to starve to loose weight, we just need to eat more sensibly and healthier. Additionally, I try to stay away from too much pasta and potatoes...they seems to make me gain weight more readily.
Hopefully when your family sees how serious that you are about eating right they will join you.
Good luck to you!

1. Commit it to yourself if you wanna do this right.
2. Cut back on food, like junk food and replace it with the healthier ones. (apples, oranges. . .)
3. Take a daily activity. Wether you can walk around the house, play a sport, run, just get active.
4. Commit to less lazyness like video-games, TV, computer, etc. Limit it down to 2 Hours max.
5. Don't give up!
6. Eat right.
7. You won't see results in just like a day. It takes time so it may take like. . .a while.

Basically, dude, stay away from diets! If you don't want diabetes, forget diets. What you need is not to eat less, but to just exercise. No matter what it is - Get up, and get out - and get that blood pumping. It's the only natrural way. Good luck, man. :)

Find out how many calories it takes to maintain wieght. Any number of web sites can show you that search "caloric need" and be honest when answering the question especially activity level. then eat less and or increase your activity level. For your calculation estimate 3500 calories per pound of fat you'd like to lose.

Change how you eat, when you look at bread, dont think it tastes good, think its disgusting, you need to become a celebrity and think its icky. Before you eat something, look at how many calories per gram it is, you dont need to count your calories but you definitely need to see what foods you should stop eating alot of. Its a lifelong thing, either you eat like a pig and workout like a bull, or eat like Ashley Olsen and sit on the couch all day, up to you.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!
