On all of the "bonus materials" on most movies I've seen, they act like money is nothing; building huge wooden sculptures, leasing out huge plots of land - where is this money coming from?

There's capital of several people in that invest and later become shareholder some films are even paid by government who also sponsor.
Also there little commercials when they showing a drink in the film the mark will always be visible when they get sponsored.
Actors sometimes also play for less payment but become shareholder (sometimes better! like Jack Nicholson in Easy Rider) and make a big fortune when the film becomes a smashing hit.

Usually the producer fronts the money -- or loans are taken out (often BY the producer/s).

You basically have to have connections. You tell someone (A Producer) your idea, they think it's a good idea, they give you money to make your movie.
