You can have a casual conversation with that person without getting into personnal details so she would not be embarrassed or annoyed by the questions. A lot of people do not like to be questionned. I know I don't! In friendly conversation you can get to know the person just fine and you can "feel" if the person is genuine. Be observant, and listen as if that person was the most important in the world. You'll probably hit it off right away! Good luck. Happy new year.
