Norton's character was totally imasculated by society until he finally had a psychotic break. His alternate identity (Pitt) was the epitome of manhood and masculinity and the two of them were at war with each other. Essentially, some other guys saw Norton beating himself up and were intrigued. He formed the group so that guys could reclaim their manliness.
