While there have been others since Williams, American still has a lot of hidden and suppressed racial issues to deal with. I don't believe it's entirely, or even mostly a conscious discernment, but America still equates white with fair, beauty, purity and black with less than white when it comes to aesthetics. This is true despite the fact that even proportions of truly beautiful women in the world have been non-white. The cultural influence, pushed by advertising, is so strong that many young non-white girls pick white dolls over darker skinned dolls to play with saying they are prettier (even though they are often made from the same molds with different colored plastics).

ya your right..... vanessa williams is amazing and is a really great actress but besides her nothing really comes from being a miss america winner. i personally hate beauty pagents. usually the ugglier or planner looking ones have better personalites. i think beauty pagents give white girls (like myself) a bad name. im not raciest and dont want anyone to get that idea, but the truth is that usually white girls win.

Who cares? There would be a Miss Black America Pagent, but nobody would want to be Miss Idaho.

There have been 5

1984 - Vanessa Williams
1984 - Suzette Charles (who took over after Vanessa lost her crown)
1990 - Debbye Turner
1991 - Marjorie Vincent
1994 - Kimberly Cockerham

(oh and apparently there is one just recently)

duno. But african american girls and african ones are very stylish at the pagents and as you say it mite be a bit of racism or sum underlying thing stopping them going ahead

Personally I think it's not racism but that the "ideal" representative
of America should (not in my opinion) be white (to the judges.)
