are bettas compatibible with golfish?

that is, can I put a male betta in a 10 gal tank with 4 goldfish in it?

I would not recommend it. The tank is already overcrowded. Besides, Bettas are tropical (warm water) fish and goldfish are cold water fish. If you heat the tank to a temperature the Betta likes, the goldfish's metabolism will speed up, increasing the amount they eat, the speed they grow, and the HUGE amount they poop, making tank maintainence a daily necessity.

No, that would be overcrowding, and also goldfish need colder water than bettas. And bettas can nip at fins and be aggressive towards the others.
