Internet providers (for the most part) provide dynamic ip addresses to their customers. Which means they have several servers in several locations online all at once, and the ip address you use to connect into their servers sometime switches from location to location if to many peple in a certain area are overloading that areas server. So your ip address would appear (stolen) to someone trying to connect to your computer by ip address in the case where that address might change for the above reason. Of course you can get yourself a static ip address, but that is not the usual method most people use, and the very fact you asked that question leads me to believe you probably have a dynamic address with your IP account provider.
All of the various servers in any IP network all have themselves linked to your personal information, account status, password you use to get online, and billing info etc.etc. which therefore your actual connection location is pretty much hidden from the average user, as each connection from whichever connection they were routed to all would give the same user friendly (or maybee not so user friendly (ha, ha) information back to the user.
You also can set up your own machine to be a server, and then leaving it on, that ip address should not change, but I doubt that is what you were asking. The account that you use though if it is sniffed out or hijacked by a hacker could certainally be misappropriated to bring you much grief, which is why it is wise to use hard to crack passwords with your ip provider.I doubt you want somebody orderig stuff in your name, or committing illegal acts using your name, or maybee even purchasing something online using your name but some other address?

Nothing... an IP address cannot be "stolen". Well... on a wireless Local Area Network, when the Server is down, somebody could request an IP that you use with your Server... then some Server applications wouldn't be found by the clients. Even that situatuion is very easy to fix and only on a local scope.
On the internet, your IP is assigned to you by your ISP. Your ISP "rents" a bunch of different IP numbers from the Internet Registry (http://www.arin.net/). Home Internet Providers tend to assign a different IP everytime you log on (dynamic). This is because they don't really want you to have a constant location on the internet to Serve anything.

An IP adress can not be stolen. If you meant someone found out what your IP address was, as long as you have a simple firewall, they can't do anything. Do not fear.

Hi, if somebody knows your IP address AND if they have a trojan such as netbus, netpro and you execute their .exe file that they send you or you download from the internet or any other executable file .bat or .com, they can delete stuff from your computer, open/close your cd-rom, and practically delete important files from your operating system so you will have to reformat your computer, they can even know what you type such as email passwords, etc and then this information is send to their computer.
But, if your IP address is very secure meaning there aren't any open ports it is extremely hard or even impossible to do anything unless you download a trojan or some malicious file that sends information back to the other person. You can make sure of this if you have any firewall on, and usually windows SP2 has firewall turned on automatically. You can check this by going to start > control panel > network connections then go to properties and you will see if firewall is on or off or automatic.
You can make sure if your computer is secure by going to www.dslreports.com/tools and click go on "port scan"
it will tell you if there can be any attacks on your IP address even if you never downloaded any trojans or malicious files.

when IP address is stolen it can be used to illegal purposes and direct those illegal purposes to the 'owner'..
for example: What if someone steals the 'number plate' of your car and uses it on a similar car and then uses that car for robbing a bank. When the cops chase that car, it'll point towards the 'wrong number plate' and inturn put you in spotlight!... hope u understand my illustration.
Something like that can be done when an IP is stolen.

each computing gadget has a diverse LAN IP. You all might want to in all likelihood percentage a similar WAN IP, inspite of the indisputable fact that. in my opinion i might want to get your own community and implementation because this is really basic to smell community site visitors off of different hosts/pcs as you've it set up.
