Currently the Tambaran - Nagapattinam - Kamban Express has been stopped. I would be travelling with my parents and kids to Chennai - Vailankanni in March. There is no news about the restoration about Kamban Express, when will the services resume. Can someone please help me, with:-
1. Is there another option to reach Vailankanni by train?
2. If not are there Volvo buses which go to Vailankanni from Chennai (Direct) and where do I need to book these buses from?
Thank in advance.

22:30:00 RMT-Semi Sleeper Vedaranyam 240

U can check the timetable at www.rathimeena.co.in .u need to do a registrations and follow insructions...u can book online till 3 weeks in advance..so pls check during time of travel.I travel frequently and use only their bus.The website also has contact details which will be useful.

There are dislocation of train services to Upto Tanjore and to Nagapatinam etc, due to guage conversion from Chennai to Tanjore. I would suggest you to go by Bus only. From Chennai Koyambedu Bus Terminus there are buses to Nagapattinam and directly to Velankanni. The bus travel is overnight. There is no Volvo buses available but hi-tech buses and super deluxe buses of State Express bus Services are available. There are many buses in the evenings upto 11.p.m and it will reach you next morning. There is not booking done very much in advance. you can enquire when you go to Chennai and you can select the bus and get advance reservation.
About Veilankanni -

Aforesaid train is held due to guage convertion which may take a year time
Better take Pondicherry Passanger from Chennai Egmore which starts in the morning and reaches Pondi in four hours and from there is 100 Kms distance which can be convered by bus or taxi
Very few busses are availble. Obvious if service provider is less service will not be good. Take government busses

Take train upto Mailadudurai. Daily ther is a passenger from Tambaram, in the night which reaches early in the morning. You can take bus or taxi from there. Alternatively take the Kumbakonam train via Trichy/Tanjaore, and take a bus or taxi from their. For trai details and ticket booking, go to : http://www.indianrail.gov.in/
