It's politics and propaganda. Hemp is too competitive with the cotton and paper industries is one example (I didn't say this is why it was outlawed but it is one reason it is not made legal, including hemp that has minimal amounts of THC. It is just starting to be looked at again for cultivation which the pulp and paper and cotton industries do not want, http://www.thehia.org/hempfacts.htm)
I have not smoked it since I was 15 (I'm 31 now), but no one is going to convince me it is any worse for you healthwise than alcohol or smoking cigarettes.

Show us those tests. How can it be legal when had been proofed that you can't perform any job, driving, etc under the influence of that sh**? Look the damage that marijuana can do to your brain that you wrote "illeagle" when you suppose to write illegal and "relativly" when suppose to be relatively. And you still thinking isn't harmful for health? Come on, smoke it if you want to, but don't pull others into the pitch of garbage you are getting into. Perhaps, Do you know how many people factions from the left are supported with the money of the marijuana? How many terrorists acts are committed because the money of marijuana solvent the armory buying for this terrorists commit their crimes?
But seeing your point of view seems you don't care, perhaps your dieing neurons don't permit you to see forward. Get help.

Ok. Nearly every answer is wrong on nearly every point so far.
First, for all those who want to see the major studies of the subject, you can find the full text of most of the major government commission reports over the last 100 years at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/studies.htm The collection includes the largest studies ever done by the governments of the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and the World Health Organization, just to mention a few.
They all reached similar conclusions. They all said that the marijuana laws were based on ignorance and nonsense. They all said that marijuana was not a major threat to individuals or to society. They all said that the criminal laws against marijuana do more harm than good and should have been repealed long ago.
If any of the people above know of any major study of the drug laws that reached a different conclusion, I would love to hear about it -- but they don't.
Marijuana was not outlawed because of a conspiracy over hemp. You can find a good discussion of why marijuana was outlawed at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/mj_outlawed.htm You can find a discussion of the hemp conspiracy at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/hemp_conspiracy.htm
In short, marijuana was outlawed because of two major reasons. The first was racial prejudice against Mexican immigrants. The second was the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana -- exactly the opposite of the modern "gateway" myth. You can find the history of the gateway myth at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/library/gateway_myth.htm
Contrary to what others have said, marijuana does not kill brain cells, grow hair on your palms, or any of those other things. The largest study of the health effects to date was done by Kaiser Permanente. After surveying the records of 65,000 patients over a number of years, they found no significant differences in the health records of pot smokers versus non-smokers. The full text of that study is online in the library above.
The latest research on marijuana and lung cancer actually shows that marijuana users have slightly lower rates of lung cancer than average. This may be because the active ingredient - THC - is known to have anti-tumor properties.
Marijuana continues to be illegal for a few major reasons. At the top of the list is ignorance and bigotry. There are a lot of people (as you can see above) who still believe the Reefer Madness baloney. This is because the US Government has had an openly stated policy of lying about drugs since at least 1925. This is not my opinion, it is historical fact, and I can give references to anyone who wants them. The interesting thing you will find is that -- if you give these people references where they can read about it -- they will flatly refuse to read anything that they think might disagree with them. They really don't want to know the truth.
The second reason is that marijuana prohibition is profitable, both to government agencies and to the companies that do business with them. Nearly every government agency gets Federal funds to combat marijuana. Nobody wants to give up that part of their budget. In addition, entire industries -- such as drug testing, prison building, and toys for cops -- have developed that are dependent upon marijuana prohibition. The biggest political contributor in the state of California is the prison guard's union. Some police departments are dependent on drug-related asset seizures for items of basic budget. In other words, if they don't make enough seizures, cops will lose their jobs. Obviously, because of this, the War on Some Drugs was never designed to be won.

The only reason marijuana is illegal is because some guy was making hemp paper and was making more money then this other rich guy so the rich guy got pissed and made it illegal. Now, it's just because the government can't tax it. If the government sold drugs (because Americans spend $91 mil a year on drugs) then we'd all be incredibly rich and each public school would have apple laptops for every student. America would be the best place to live ever.

I smoked enough pot in the 70's than probably all of you here combined, don't smoke it now, just gives me the munchies and makes me tired..... Besides what everyone else has already written, my thinking of it is this...I think it should be decriminalized, I just can't see sticking someone in jail for a quarter ounce, and put him in jail with really "bad" people....I find that absurd...I think we have a far worse drug that needs to be removed from society, and that is the Meth epidemic that has swept this country and probably elsewhere.....Pot doesn't make people violent.I have NEVER at my age, way older than probably most of you here, have ever heard of someone smoking pot and murdering their family, or some other haneous crime...EVER!!!! You can only smoke so much till you smoke yourself "straight" (not literally, but you can only get so high, then its a waste of time to continue to smoke it, unless you "come down" and smoke some more",ya' sit there doing nothing, till you pig out and then go to sleep).....I smoked when it was $15.00 an ounce, I have never heard of violence attributed to smoking pot, maybe stealing by non working punks, who rip off their families......My memory is as sharp as a razor, so I don't buy all the mumbo jumbo stuff some anti pot people have to write......Maybe if the world smoked the stuff everyone would be a bit more mellow, and we wouldn't have all the violence in the world we do have!!!!!...Potato chip companies would have to double their quantity they produce though......

Marijuana is not harmless.
Someone who smokes marijuana regularly may have many of the same respiratory problems that tobacco smokers do, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illnesses, a heightened risk of lung infections, and a greater tendency toward obstructed airways. Cancer of the respiratory tract and lungs may also be promoted by marijuana smoke.
Marijuana has the potential to promote cancer of the lungs and other parts of the respiratory tract because marijuana smoke contains 50 percent to 70 percent MORE carcinogenic hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke.
Marijuana's damage to short-term memory seems to occur because THC alters the way in which information is processed by the hippocampus, a brain area responsible for memory formation. In one study, researchers compared marijuana smoking and nonsmoking 12th-graders' scores on standardized tests of verbal and mathematical skills. Although all of the students had scored equally well in 4th grade, those who were heavy marijuana smokers, i.e., those who used marijuana seven or more times per week, scored significantly lower in 12th grade than nonsmokers. Another study of 129 college students found that among heavy users of marijuana critical skills related to attention, memory, and learning were significantly impaired, even after they had not used the drug for at least 24 hours.
It fries your brain, and it is worse for you than cigarettes. It is not harmless.

Your remark about "Every Study Done" is completely false. Marijuana smoke is quite harmful to your lungs, your throat, your teeth. It is illegal because it is a drug and people who use it are impaired by its effects. Society has a reasonable expectation that people driving cars, flying planes, driving trucks or busses, be un-impaired. You cant legalize something that is designed to impair you. What about alcohol? Is that your next question? You dont have to get drunk every time you have a beer or a glass of wine (although people do). WIth marijuana, it has only one function and that is to get you high (impaired). I am glad it's illegal and I hope it stays that way. Your sadly mis-informed about YOUR American government.

Pot is far from harmless. But so are Big Macs and hot dogs and beer and soda and cotton candy and... the list is endless. Look, it is not possible to legislate morality. People are going to do what people are going to do. If someone wants to get high, they will find a way. Some people use liquor, others use smack, and others use pot. If an escape from reality is wanted, people will find a way to get one (ever hear of whippets?)
To me, marijuana is God's gift to humans. You plant a seed, and a plant growns. From this plant you can make clothes and rope, plus you can take the leaves, dry them, and get a buzz! Wow! it's like making CORN illegal...it grows from a seed people.
If you read the history of hemp and Hearst, you will have your answer.

I can see that you guys like marijuana, so you might not like my answer. I have seen many potheads in my time here on earth and I'm glad that they are only a small part of the people I come in contact with. Why would anybody want to be like that? Why would you want society to be like that? I'd rather try to keep that section of the population as low as possible....for everybody's protection.

I have been through this many times here and I am glad the rest of you reasonable people straighten this guy out rather than me. By the way, those of you with a clear head are waisting your time because the druggies and pot heads do not want to hear our logic and thumbs down us. Been through that one to.

It is harmful, it effects reproduction such as sperm and the mind, think if you were to smoke some weed and get into a car. It's illegal for reason because it's addicting. Second, why don't you use cigrettes as a replacement for this question.
