Wash everywhere the ants have been with bleach. They leave scent trails, and more ants will follow where others have gone before.
I had a TERRIBLE problem with ants. Nothing at all worked - until I got Terro. I used the liquid baits.
At first, it will attract ants, but that's a good thing. They will take the poison back to the colony and share it. It's the only poison I've found to work - and ants actually LOVE it. Once the ant problem "goes away" keep a small amount of Terro out in a place where they tended to gather...just in case.
Also, try to figure out how they are getting into the house. Caulk any holes you can find.
Good luck.

I had this question years ago, and I will never have to worry about the ant issue anymore.
I've tried "thousands" of methods to rid the ants from my living space. In the end, I found a kind that has the shape of a chalk. You just draw the chalk wherever the ants are. After touching the chalk dust about 60 seconds, numerous ants go into commotion and lay dead miraculously.
The chalk chemical is very effective and long lasting. Unfortunately, this effective pesticide can endanger children for its innocent look, so it is not sold in the U.S. You can buy them very cheap overseas.
Once you've tried this chalk, you'd wonder why they are still selling those non-effective stuff out there. If hope I'm not theorizing a conspiracy (!).

Try ant traps (usually small plastic round or rectangular devices no bigger than a matchbox; sold at many super markets). I've had success with them in the past, when I was living in Florida.
Also, I've read that many ants do not like cucumber; supposedly putting cucumber slices around the area where the ants enter can help (I've never tried this remedy).
Another possible solution would be to try electronic insect repelling devices (they emit high frequency sounds) to drive away the ants (I've never tried this remedy, either).
If none of those methods work, then contact a local university that has an entomology or biology department and ask them to identify your ant species. Some species prefer certain kinds of food (e.g., some like sweet foods, others like greasy/fatty foods). Knowing the type of food they like helps in determining the best kind of trap for them.
I think that using fumigation or pesticide sprays is a bad idea.

Spray the exterior of your home around the base and the eves with blackflagg. Home Depot sells the right one to carry it back to the nest to destroy them and their eggs. Just ask. and its all outdoors so you dont have to worry about pesticide in the home. And they also carry a sound repellent for in the home. Humans cant hear it but buggs can and and its too obtrusive to them so they get out. And no poison in the home. I had one of the sound devices go bad once though and my girls kept unplugging it. I could not hear anything but I guess it was driving them nuts.

you could try sprinkling Cinnamon across where they are coming in if you know where they are coming in. They won't cross it.
Putting out containers with syrups and sugars as some ppl mentioned is just going to tell the ants "come on over and bring all your friends!"

what kind of ant are those?...if they are carpenter ants, you better call someone that specialize on those insects, a carpenter ant can destroy the wood on the house, is expensive treatment but save you thousands of dollars in repairs...is a lot of good pest exterminators..do not go for the pest control business.. they control it but do not exterminate the problem..

I saw this question before. One person said, "Buy liquid Terro - works great." and the other person said, "Put vinegar all around the base boards and any other possible place they dont like it put some in a spray bottle and they should be gone by the end of the day." The favored one was the "Liquid Terro" answer.

It sounds disgusting but try leaving little bowels with a mixture of syrup and sugar lying all over the house. It sure worked for my brothers place and his was crawling with ants. They go for the sweetness and the sugar and get trapped by the stickiness of the syrup. Good luck!

i've always heard citrus cleaners work. real citrus, not citrus scent. i've never tried it though. ants will keep going over the same trail and supposedly citrus( like orange or lemon ) is the only thing that gets rid of this trail.
