I hate to say this, but nothing you can buy will make a depressed person truly happy. However, be her friend; show her you care; let her cry on your shoulder, but don't try forcing her to talk; when she does talk, listen to her; and suggest that she needs more help than you can give her. If she makes an appointment to see someone, offer to go with her for moral support. She may not show it at the time, but she will know that you care about her, and that's what's important. If she's put on the right medication, her mood will improve, and when she thinks of you and how much you care, then she'll be happy.

Try something that appeals to senses: herbal teas in pretty wrapping... maybe a bone china cup to go with it. Hand lotion with a light fragrance (not too heavy). Soft pink slippers. A book of poetry. A silk scarf to go with her favorite jacket. A Tony Bennett cd. Note cards with tropical floral design.
No doubt the lady could use some help, and it's good if you are in a position to offer it, or assist her family with getting her started. But what will make her smile is the simplicity of a thoughtful gift from a friend.

a prove that life is beautiful, that there are so many things she can do (like taking an acting class that she's always wanted to => making new friends, trying something she hever has) and that love is just around the corner, no need to worry. If you are a good friend then it won't be difficult for you to find her a new hobby - surely you know what she's passionate about (writing?fashion?golf? It's never too late for success << tell her this). Just try to keep her busy doing something she likes. Busy people don't have time for depression :-)

How about the gift of love and prayers. Maybe take her out for lunch. She needs to get out of the house more. That would probably help her more than something material. I went through it once, and the nurse would come to my house twice a week. She told me that I should just go out for coffee, and I took her advice. It helped me more than anything. The walls were closing in on me and I had to force myself, but it did help. God Bless.

Genuinely caring about her and being there for her unconditionally, being a good friend. You can't fix her depression, you can encourage her to get help and offer ideas to fortify her spirit. Positive thoughts/actions surrounding a person can truly change the tide.

To be honest with you, when someone is truly depressed, gifts won't help much.
Just being there for them will. Be an open heart and shoulder to cry on if needed.
Have lots and lots of patience.

Your heart is in the right place, but there is no "thing" that will bring her out of her depression...she needs to get some help.

How about giving something of yourself? Spend time with her, take her out for coffee or lunch or afternoon drinks, listen to her talk and let her get things off her chest.. Give her friendship. Give her hope.
