The Spanish word ***** originates from the Latin word niger, meaning black. In English, ***** or neger became negar and finally ******.saying the word ****** have gone too far.Regardless of the long nasty history of the word, it is part of American culture, literature, and music. You will hear this word used in casual conversations, mostly among Blacks, young and old. "Hey, what are you doing today my *****?" can be heard everyday when riding the 4-train from downtown New York to Uptown. Get on the Crenshaw bus in Los Angeles from Adams Blvd to Inglewood and I can assure you that you will hear young Black males and youths using the word as often as one would use a definite article. We need to get to a point where our society gets beyond whining about words and to some of the problems that exist in our communities.
There are far too many other issues we should be consumed with rather than the speech of another person.

Wow Hard one... I am white... However Honky is supposed to be a bash word for whites as I have heard. Just like the N word is geared towared Blacks. I do not like that word I do not think blacks are that word I believe any race of people can be a N word. And I understand your coming from. there is bad history from it and I think I'd stick with hey brother sister or friend..... Like Hey Friend How's it going. Sounds way better and makes you look like you aren't some bad person. Good Luck with it. I know there are lots of Whites who hates blacks and blacks that hates whites etc etc I think that the Whites who did the blacks wrong was wrong but in some cases whites are still treated badly over it when it wasn't our fault we can't help what the old dead folks now did back when. But we still pay. But some whites won't learn to Love. I have had black and white friends Spanish and other race of friends. I try to love everyone even the unloveable...

The way in which this word is used BY the black community---is done mostly out of the freedom to do so in a Specialized manner that is not available to "whites"----that is why it is done with such abandon and in ways that trivialize it !! It is yet another "priviledge" that they alone are "allowed" because for a white person to use the word at all is considered an absolute outrage !!! Just another form of reverse discrimination in action and just another reason that the word continues to divide the races !!!

I personally think that because society sees it as a derogatory term that nobody should use it for any reason. Anytime that a double standard is involved that should give one the "heads up" that something isn't right. Meaning, it's OK for you to use that word because you're Black but you would look down on me and call me a racist if I use it as a White person. See what I mean? That's wrong. If it's wrong for me to use it's wrong for you to use. If I hear you use it and I choose to do it as well you should accept it with no questions.
Double standards are never right. That's one base characteristic of racism right there and racism of ANY KIND is wrong.
To get back to your question, I don't personally care what anyone calls me. I know who I am and I'm secure in myself so it's just a word to me. I don't use it because I know it's offensive and if it's offensive to even one it's not worth doing.

Yeah, it wrong to call people of other races the N word. You don't want them calling you the N word or someone else who's black to hear them use the N word. So it's best not to get them use to hearing or using that word.

If you don't want the word to be used negatively towards you, then you should do what you can to eliminate the word from being used at all. Even though you mean no harm by using it, other people often do. By using it more you empower the idiots who use it to racially insult others. Stop using it, imo.

That is normal that happens to you if you are not used to the enviroment, but you have to be careful talking because you should talk the same way to all people. It is like you can't talk to your boss the same way you talk to your best friend or talking in a church like we could do in a club or something. Try to get used to a more neutral vocabulary. Your friends may not care and many wouldn't notice it, but if you learn to control that kind of things you may feel more secure about yourself in all kind of enviroments and you will have all doors open.

I have no idea why its referred to in secrecy the "n" word...
like if you say it, you'll be struck by lightening. I'm white and have lots of black friends - they called each other that all the time, just in kidding around.
Actually, the Websters definition of it is "ignorant person".
Ya know, I don't want to offend anybody either, but i'll be darned if i'm gonna walk around on eggshells

Yeah I understand, it's like my girlfriends and I calling each other B*tch, biotch, etc. and it seems perfectly fine amoung friends almost like a badge of true acceptance, however the N. word is becoming so un-P.C. that I'm sure many would say just dont use it.

Better to avoid it. Now my son and his black friend call each other that word and every other insulting word on earth. They enjoy every moment of it. It is their way of bonding and joking around.
But someone else will be seriously offended.
