Gaining more points allows you to increase in levels, which allows you to do more on Answers. If you click on the number of points you have on the side, it will tell you what makes you gain and lose points, and what points you need for levels, and what you can do at those levels.

A person who has a lot of points has answered a lot of questions, if you hover over their name in some places or click on it, it will tell you how many best answers they have. A person with a lot of best answers probably knows their stuff and you may want to listen to them.

To my knowledge they don't do anything else, and are just for show otherwise. They may be worth something in the future.

when u join yahoo answers for the first time, u have 100 points defaulted. u can use these points to ask questions. 5 points gets knocked off when u ask a question. similarly u get 2 points when u answer a question. if the questioner decides that ur answer was the best then u get 10 extra points. as u get more and more points u can move on to different levels. we are all placed in level 1 by default. u are moved on to level 2 when u reach 250 points. with each level u get more privilages and advantages. eg with level 2 u can vote and decide th best answer and also u can answer upto 40 q's a day
