most likely your ears were pierced with a 14 guage, which is pretty much standard, i would go buy some acrylic barbells that are straight,, usually cheap too, your bodys less sensitive to acrylic than it is to metal, but if you need metal use sugerical stainless steel, use a 12 and it's going to hurt a bit, but put them in, and make sure you clean them in the shower with antibacterial soap, like dial and turn them just as you did when you got your ears pierced for the very first time, and then probably 2 to 3 weeks later you can move on to the next guage which is 10 and move on from there, dont forget to wash them in the shower and rotate them, and make sure your hands are clean and use hydrogen peroxide on a q tip and rub it around the piercing once a day or so. Depending on where you live, you can also go to tattoo and piercing shop, and the piercer can do it for you but it costs 15 dollars or so.

The best way to do it is go gauge by gauge. Generally start with 12 and work your way "up" to whatever guage you want. The best way to do it yourself is to get pincher type earrings. That way you are guaranteed to not rip your piercing hole. It takes about 2 weeks for your ear to fully stretch out, if they aren't used to it, and about a month to fully heal.
