I'd love to know the answer to that, because I'm pretty depressed right about now too.

I suppose it's a lot of things:

You look back on the past year, and wonder what you could have done differently, what mistakes you made. You think about how you could have accomplished more or savored the good times more fully. You think about the bad things that have happened in the world.

And then you also look ahead, and its uncertain. You want to be optimistic, but not overly so, because you never know what's coming. And you think about the new responsibilities of the year, the upcoming stresses and difficulties. You wonder if you'll really be able to improve on the past year. You think about the good things that'll happen, but you can't help but think about the potential bad things in the world as well.

Plus, there's just the time of the year. It's the early middle of winter in many places, which contributes to seasonal blues. And the excitement of the holidays, the happy bustle, is all over. You might have been looking forward to all those parties and celebrations--and now they're all over. It's back to regular, mundane lifestyle.

Oh, and New Year's Eve itself can be depressing. The excessive alcohol can make you feel pretty bad the next day, you might have gone yet another year without having anyone to kiss at midnight, or maybe your last party of the season just wasn't what you expected it to be.

I'm no psychologist, but that's my opinion.

This is SO documented that it has a name
Post Seasonal Depression
The thing here is----it is brought on by a number of things and is somewhat different for each person that goes through it-- even though there are a number of similarities-----
A lot of it has to do with the Major expectations that some people have with the onset of the holiday season--- they get all pumped up over the prospects of parties---- the gifts they are looking to receive--- loved ones that they expect to be seeing and all kinds of things that may or may not actually happen !! If they don't happen---or if they do and the expectaions were greater than what actually transpires in it all----- a moment or two after the season passes and --------depression
It is a lot like the LOW that sets in with an addict after the HIGH that they experience !!
Then, again, with a lot of people --- the shear fact that the holidays are OVER is enough of a downer to put them into a tailspin of bad emotions !!
Most people do not know this -- but-- Christmas season is the single worse time in the world for suicides !! People emotions just get all out of whack at this time and they put entirely too much on the season and not nearly enough thought on reality and just allowing things to be !!

Personally speaking, I found out on New Years eve 1999 that my father was going to die, then he died on the 4th January 2000. That's why I'm depressed.
Maybe other people that are depressed have lost someone around Christmas or New Year too. It's a hard anniversary to forget.

Because it falls right after Christmas!
By the time the New Year rolls around, you realize that you didn't accomplish all that you set out to do within the last year.
Then you realize you are going to become a year older, and must accomplish something for this year!
Taxes are also just around the corner. That's liable to make anyone get a little depressed!
For what it's worth, Happy New Year!

Many people are so depressed because a new year according to most is supposed to be a big celebration that is celebrated with many others. Big plans~big parties~lots of people~lots of drinking~Not everyone have people to celebrate the new year with or parties to go to~they end up sitting by themselves watching others have a blast on tv.
Im sure there are many other reason's as well. So many things can be depressing @ this time of year.

New Years Day indicates the passing of another year.

People reflect on the events of the previous year and think of the future. It is also a sign of how quickly the years are passing, a depressing thought of many.

Because they are lost. They don't know the purpose of human life. They spend the night getting intoxicated, (denying their true self) abusing their own body and very existence and then then next day are sick or depressed due to being illusioned.) Even if they didn't go out our get drunk they sit home meditating on the miserable condition of their life and this world. This world is Maya(illusion) and is temporary and full of misery. The quickest way to get out of this illusion and misery is to chant the Maha Mantra (the great mantra for deliverance from suffering and illusion) go to krishnaculture. for information how to become truly happy and come to our constitutional position. Read Bhagavad Gita as it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada and understand the purpose of human life.

Maybe they're starting to realize this year isn't going to be any better than the last. On New Years Eve, they're hopeful for the change and the new year. Then when it hits they're disappointed.

probably because it is the calm after the storm....

examle: after the hectic and busy schedule for preparing for a wedding... the bride and groom are off to honeymoon and everyone else is not only exhausted but also feel a little bit of a let down for some reason....maybe because the rush of all the work is over ...

maybe on new years day they are missing being able to bring in a new year with love ones they've lost. Or maybe they are without a companion and long for what couples around them have. it's hard to tell
