Personally, I think it because it is easier to give up than to work hard. Marriage is hard work. Many people don't want to stay and work on the problems they encounter in a marriage. We've been married 21 years and have gone through some very difficult times. Some days it would have been so easy to just walk away. We decided to work together and work through things. It has made us stronger and we love each other more than ever because we worked together.

Probably because people enter into marriage without thinking it out clearly. Also, people are less likely to stay in a bad marriage because it is ok to get a divorce(i.e. abuse, etc.). However, more and more people are taking to slow and moving in together for a couple of years before getting married, so hopefully in about 10 years the rate will be lower.

I believe its because people jump into a marriage with their eyes closed! They expect a fairytale life and they don't take into account all the different aspects that marriage entails. And add the fact that divorce is so common, easy to obtain, and more acceptable in today's society and you have a basic recipe for disaster!

Many marriages was because of unwanted preganancy. People don't really know about love. They know desire. When temptation and difficult times comes, couples can not get over it.
Another side of it is that, now that woman has more freedom and power, they no longer "stuck" in a relationship like the older generations. They are free to get out when they are abused or neglected.

Our society is in the toilet. High divorce rate is just one symptom of a greater pathology.
The increase in drug use, alcohol use, homosexuality, sexually transmitted disease, infidelity, the garbage on TV, the mockery of family in pop culture, it all discourages marriage and encourages a selfish disregard for life and civility.

People are getting married for the wrong reasons (i.e: financial stability, caretaker, babysitter), and basically not getting to know their spouse all that well before making the big decision.
