Watch night is always the last night of the year. African-Americans go to the church of their chose around 9:00pm and celebrate the coming year. Service usually lets out around 8:00 a.m. We have service, worship and praise, late dinner, watch movies etc. But none of this happens until church service is over. It is basically an alternative to bar hopping and being in the streets, or away for people who are alone to have people around them. At my church this year we had a little over 5,000 people attend watch night. We celebrated God and thanked Him for giving us another year to get it right! I don't think this is just a tradition for African-Americans though. I think Catholics have Mass and other religions have their own celebration.

I am not sure I understand your question (and I really want to). What is "the watch service"?
