Start at the end and work your way backwards.

He had $14.50 left after spending half...so he had $29 before he bought the office supplies.

He had $29 + $8.12 = $37.12 before he bought the printer ribbon.

So, since he originally spent half of his money on the printer, he must have had 2 x $37.12 = $74.24 when he started.

(Cheap printer...)

just work backword!

at the end there was $14.50
since he spent half on supplies and ended up with $14.50
You multiply 14.50 x 2 = 29
Since he spent $8.12 on the ribbon and ended up with $29
You add 8.12 + 29 = 37.12
Since he spent half on the printer and ended up with $37.12
You multiply 37.12 x 2 = 74.24
And There you go!!! Your answer : $74.24
You'll find it pretty easy!! and I'm in the 7th grade

After spending half of the money for purchasing office supplies he had $14.50 left.Hence before making the purchase he had $14.50X2=$29 with him
He purchased the computer ribbon for $8.12.Hence before making yhe purchase he had$29+$8.12=$37.12
kThis was half of his amount in the wallet.
So he had initially $37.12X2=$74.24 with him

x = money in wallet

Computer printer = x/2
Printer Ribbon = 8.12
Supplies = (x/2 - 8.12)/2
Cash left = 14.50

x = (x/2) + 8.12 + [(x/2 - 8.12)/2] + 14.50
x = (x/2) + [(x/2 - 8.12)/2] + 22.62
x = (x/2) + [((x/2)/2) - (8.12/2)] + 22.62
x = (x/2) + [x/4 - (4.06)] + 22.62
x = (x/2) + (x/4) - 4.06 + 22.62
x = 3x/4 - 18.56
x - 3x/4 = 18.56
x/4 = 18.56
x = 18.56 x 4
x = 74.24

How much money did Joe have to start with? $74.24

he started with x
he spent x/2 leaving him with x/2. he then spent $8.12 leaving
x/2-8.12. he spent (x/2-8.12)/2 leaving $14.50
therefore $14.50=(x/2-8.12)/2 multiply both sides by 2
$29.00=x/2-$8.12 add $8.12 to each side.
$37.12=x/2 multiply by 2
x=$74.24
