Even though I was breathlessly hooked by the first book in Gabaldon's time-travel series, I find myself scanning the pages of her extremely long sequels, searching for the plot elements and skipping some of the dialogue.

I do enjoy the relationships between the characters, and I admire the author's incorporation of research into her plots. The plot developments keep me reading to find out what will happen to these folks.

But--Does anybody else find some of these l-o-n-g novels to be a bit wordy? I'd like the books even more if they were about half as long.

Is this just me, or does anybody else have this reaction?

I know what you mean, I had the same problem with the Clan of the Cave Bear series. But, I wish LOTS more authors would write historical romance time travel as well as Diana Gabaldon! It's a desert out there!

I heard that these books were so good, so I got the first one at the library. I stopped reading it around page 100, though. It was just too long and not really the kind of books I like to read. All of her books in this series are extremely long.

I have actually read them all several times and I really love them, the only one that I have trouble with is Drums of Autumn.
I even started to learn Gaelic.
I have gotten three other people hooked too.

Oh, my god, yes. I wish you could buy a version where it would just say, "And then they had sex again." It would cut them in half. And do I really want a blow by blow description of not only Claire treating hemorrhoids, but then sharing with Jaime that half the British army has hemorrhoids hanging out of their arses like a cluster of grapes? And you kiss your mama with that mouth?

Me, too. Each subsequent novel I found harder to wade through. I think I got bogged down and stopped reading about a third of the way through the 3rd or 4th one.

I loooooove her books...I think I skipped most of the 3rd one, and the last one! It's such a great idea, though!! Time travel, history, romance....all in one! Plus, if you love to read.......it works!! Email me when the new one comes out! y2khillbilly@yahoo.com
