I went there in May this year, and two years ago, I stayed there before heading to Moscow to jump on the Trans-Siberien Express to Beijing...

St Petersburg is a fantastic city, very European, and very beautiful. I highly recommend it.

The best place to stay (only 30 seconds/50 meters from the Hermitage and Nevsky Prospekt) in the center of the city is the Nord Hostel - staffed by wonderful healpful people who know the city.

Make sure you take a day trip to St Catherines Palace in Pushkin!

The best, most fun time to visit, is during the White Nights, in June every year. At this time the whole city is out all night partying, as the sun never sets.... and watching the bridges go up is an amazing site.

I hope that helps, and you like it.

I went to Saint Petersburg last year, by train from Latvia. I liked it. Problem was it was at the time of the G8 summit and Peterhof was closed. From the pictures I've seen, that would have been worth a visit. The roads were not filled with potholes. I did find the Russians very reserved. If you go it's worthwhile learning some Russian beforehand: all signs are in the Cyrillic script. There's a Russian bookshop that sells a public transport atlas (very useful). You won't get one in the tourist information as tourists are expected to take taxis.

I am travelling to Russia regularly, around 2 times per year. Have only visited St.Petersburg 3 or 4 times. Is is a magnificent city, with a lot of culture but also trendy bars and clubs. Very nice to spend 5-7 days. There are beautifull palaces close to St.Pete, with bus and in some cases boat trips. The Hermitage is one of the best Musea in the world, with a hughe collection. I defenitely recommend going, but not in winter. The wind can make it very cold, and too cold to spend time outside.

Yes. Absolutely loved Petersburg. Not so keen on Moscow. Too big, noisy and dirty. Have also been to Volgograd, Kazan, Perm, Yekaterinberg, Khaborovsk and Vladivostok. Also, lived in Siberian Russia for a year. I love Russia.

St Petersburg has some spectacular palaces and other buildings. Hermitage must be one of top 3 museums in the world. Certainly interesting place to visit. It used to be cheap, but now they realise tourists like to spend money, prices have gone up.

Moscow is enormous, and one of most expensive cities in the world.

The city is magnificent and steeped in history, the huge buildings are the remnants of another era when some people had such luxury and some people had nothing. Unless things have changed in the last ten years, the roads are full of pot holes, which no one it appears is responsible for repairing. The hotels left a lot to be desired. The hot water was supplied free by the state but only for 2 hours a day, after which you washed/shaved etc. in cold water. The electricity was `off` more than it was on and there was very little to buy in the shops except vodka which was cheap and tasted like turps.
You could get drunk on about three shots. The people were friendly and wanted to know all about you. I expect things have changed in the past ten years.

Who on earth has given you negatives?
I've never been to St. Petersburg but I'd love to visit it. I've seen pictures and it looks beautiful. Also Russians seem to be nice people.

My father did. And maybe I would not want to visit Russia now because racism is a big problem there and I'm Asian!
