Yes there was. It was Friday, June 11, 2004 and all federal offices were closed that day, just as they will be tomorrow.

If I remember correctly. there was a National Day of Mourning, but that is not a public holiday. On a National Day of Mourning only non-essential Government Instrumentality's are closed, ie the Postal Service. Have You checked the calender and noticed which days of the week/year You are referring to? It stands to reason that President Ford's demise and funeral would cause a problem due to the proximity to both Christmas and the New Year. President Ronald Reagan's Day of Mourning was on a Friday, (June 11th, 2004) so a holiday would just be a "long weekend".

Ronald Reagan is dead?
Wow, I seriously didn't realize that.--He was an amazing man.
I'd say 'no', there wasn't as much drama with his passing as there is currently with Ford, obviously.
Peace.

I think that there was a day of mourning for President Regan, if memory serves me properly.
