am trying to find out where to go and purchase a carb rebuild kit and have been unable to locate one. it is for the single carb 1.7 engine. if anyone can help i would greatly appricate it. thank you

1982 Rabbit is a Factory fuel injection car... You need the carb Brand and model number to find a kit...

If its a 75 to 79 Carb might be able to help...

Hint,,,, part number ZE18K; for Zenith 2B2-2B3. This fits VW Rabbit, Dasher, and Scirocco 1471cc with Zenith 32/32 2B2 or 2B3 carbs 1975 1976 eBay # 250067094552

Next::: part number ZE29K/24K; for Zenith 32/32-2B2/3 carbs. This fits Volkswagen Dasher, Rabbit, and Scirocco from 1975 through 1976 with Viton needles not steel needles.

Autozone says it is fuel injected and carb kit not required. O'Reilly Auto Parts listed repair manuals. Check this out at NAPA and see if this will fix you up:
