Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, an autobiography of Harriet Jacobs. Incredible story. Couldn't put it down.

The House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus. He has an insight into both the western view of things and the eastern. He can see things from a male perspective as well as from a woman's perspective. Plus the story is good, with a lot of suspense, the finer nuances of human nature as well as a picture of the contemporary world with all its global socio-political complicacies. Excellent. I saw the film too -- pretty good, bt the book is a must read. The film can't quite catch the essense despite flawless acting.
