I live in Kenai, Alaska. I'm an enivironmental engineer (I design ways to clean up polluted soil and groundwater). My wife is a doctor. Most people up here have jobs much like they would have in the 48 states - salesperson, mechanic, secretary, teacher, plumber, etc. All of that stuff needs to be done here, too. Even at -20F and when the winter days are 5 hours long.

Some people have more "Alaskan" jobs. I know several commercial fishermen (mostly for salmon but halibut and crab are other big fisheries). A number of people in my area work as hunting or fishing guides or run B&Bs, charter flights, etc to service those tourists. I know one (out of work) lumberjack - not much logging going on anymore. And a lot of people who work in the oil/gas industry. Some work for fourteen 12-hour days in a row in Prudhoe Bay and then get 2 weeks of vacation - 13 times a year! We also have an above average % of active and retired military folks.

and stuff? I cross-country ski in winter and hike on the beach (20-foot tides keep the beach snow-free). In summer I hike, backpack, kayak and canoe. Lots of people spend lots of fishing plus hunting in the fall. I just get 30 sockeye salmon into the freezer each year and then call it quits. Other things I do are very universal - read, play with my kids, type stuff into yahoo answers, look for interesting music for my iPod, etc.

It sounds silly, but I also try to look out the window several times a day (at three glaciated 10,000-foot volcanos across the salt water) and think about how gorgeous it is. Because if I'm not noticing that, I might as well live in Iowa.

. My biggest King salmon was 55#. I also do a lot of camping but usually when I go fishing. It's a beautiful state and wouldn't consider anywhere else. If your the outdoorsie type...You would love it here! I have a picture if you want one...
