Oh, be careful! My question got taken off on New Year's night cause I say send your'e answers in, but that is different, I know. I did not do that on purpose, it was just New Year. With a warning, too! If you hit edit, you can fix that. You'res might be ok.
This is all I know. If there are rocks on top, they were trying to pin the person down! Possibly.
And that really can be a person that someone or many believed to be a Vampire. Cause' that really did happen!
Around the grave, I have heard of. I have even seen a fence that surrounded a grave totally. It made a perfect good size yard around the grave, as if it was the person's house.
And that one is in a graveyard that is often visited for it's unusual architecture. I liked it! Good Luck!

A small stone place on the memorial stone at the grave site represents a visitor was present. To stack stones above a grave means the deceased was not buried deep enough and the pile of stones is some protection, if any, against animals digging up the corpse.

It just means that they have marked around the grave till they will know where it is. Then also a lot of people put rocks around the graves because the rocks make the grave very pretty especially with flowers.

The ceremony is known as the eoreak.
They say once the rocks have been spread around the grave, the spirit of the deceased leaves the earth forever.

A good historian could write a book on this question mainly because customs are different from place to place. The key here is around the grave but without seeing the pattern or knowing the background of the family, this question will remain unanswered. provide more info to my email and I will research it for you.

I know that Jewish people do that but I'm not sure why. I remember seeing a show about Holocaust survivors putting rocks around the graves of their families.

I believe it is simply to mark the outline of the gravesite,
mainly so people won't walk on the burial ground. It's
more out of respect for the beloved departed.
There may have been an earlier meaning but I don't know it.

I thought it was to stop animals digging them up, its also because rocks will last for thousands of years and so mark the persons grave well into the future

It means "there is a person buried in this spot. Don't step here", or something similiar.
And it looks nice too. Like having a rock garden.
