A lot of people have associated the Mayan calender 2012 date with the eschaton, which is a biblical word meaning the end of time. The physical world would not end even if a giant asteroid hit it, and killed everything except extremophiles living in lava. But time? What is time?

The interesting thing about the Mayan predictions is that they were made so long ago, yet they correspond with uncanny accuracy with the elbow of the hockey stick in the exponential increase in the speed of information development, or technology.

In the past 250 years, the result of technology, beginning with Newton, has been improvements in standards of living beyond the wildest dreams of anyone all through the 6000 years of history before that. And history itself has been the story of the development of technology, the technologies of agriculture, metal work and so on, having made possible standards of living impossible before that.

The pace of these improvements is about to accelerate mind bogglingly. This is the meaning of the 2012 date, or there abouts. It will be the end of "historical time." History will have done it's job, and we will leap in to a standard of living never before imagined, and not limited, either to certain human class groups, or even to humans.

So 2012 may be about the time that historical socio-economic paradigms (the world) are unraveling. There will be a simultaneous reknitting of post-temporal models, which has already begun. In a sense, it began with the development of technology, and that in a sense began with language, which perhaps goes back to the birds and the bees, if not to chemical talk of amoebas.

So in some way, all temporal land marks are arbitrary, and all processes are continuous. But we still look at birth and death as note worthy events.

I do not beleive the world will end at all. I think we have taken the "predictions" way to literally. Maybe the mayans just didnt finish the calendar since they were almost diminished as a race. The dinosaurs are no longer here because of some catasrophic event. Yes literally for them, the world ended. I think the world might end as we know it, some sort of "armagedeon" or "catastrophe" but that doesnt mean the world wont be here after and that there wont be some human still left. We know there was a great flood that changed the world once, an ice age that change it, seems to me that its inevitable, I could have predicted that too.

No. Scientists do not assume something out of the traditional to ensue interior the three hundred and sixty 5 days 2012, or specifically on the date December 21, different than the solstice, which occurs each and every 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. not one of the "anticipated" happenings for 2012 delay below close scrutiny. "Planet X" and "Nibiru" basically do not exist. The Mayan calendar ends a cycle, yet there have been no predictions of the top of the worldwide. The sunlight would not line up with the galactic centre; it somewhat is 6 ranges off. No asteroids or comets are truthfully anticipated to hit Earth. All of those products became prepare via sensationalists as a fashion to sell their books and television shows, and shamelessly promoted via the background Channel. do not take any of it heavily!

the Mayan calendar does not predict the end of the world in 2012, the Mayan calendar is a very structured and precise calendar that has labeled 6 eras of Ages before the year 2013. Each era coinciding with a substantial shift of knowledge and consciousness. Whether that coincides with an earthly catasrophy remains to be seen.

It depends on how you define end....

I believe that our world has entered a period of intense change brought on by the choices of humanity. Wars have been a near constant throughout the time of man, yet the destructive power of man is reaching ever newer highs. Man has sucked massive amounts of oil out of the earth and consumed the energy, shifting the distribution of carbon in the enviornment and drastically altering the chemical and energetic balance of our planet.

Global warming, increased volcanic activity, decreased animal populations and habitat, and increased weather extremes are symptoms of a system out of equilibirum.

Many people feel the coming change, we have dreams about it, and it is becoming more common to hear about it in the media. The media is a reflection of the people. Ten years ago, people that talked about the change were viewed as crazy and I kept my thoughts quiet. 40 years ago, they were just called Hippies or druggies. Today I hear it on the street, and I am not afraid to discuss it with people.

I definately feel change occuring. Will it climax in 2012? I can't say for sure, but something in my gut stirs with this subject, so it is wise I believe to prepare for anything and to enjoy everyday of life.

Change is not always a big sudden cataclysmic event, it can happen slowly over time. The crucial factors to this discussion, is that I believe we have the power to shape the coming change through the choices we make everyday.

My Mayan son-in-law, in Guatamala last spring, said he felt that the calender ended in 2012 just because that's where they finished when they were making it. It could of, to him, been shorter or longer, but just happened to end in 2012. On the other hand, I also know, as he is a perma-culture expert, he would share Al Gore's ideas on how we've treated this planet and what it may cost us.

I believe the world is spiraling toward the end at a frightening rate of speed, don`t know what year, but I feel it`s not too far off in the future. What with global warming, atomic weapons, chemical and germ warfare, etc, we are about to self-destruct. Add to the mix, amoral behavior by the masses, and one wonders how much longer can this all go on.

Stop watching the history channel and believing everthing you hear. Just kidding. No, I don't. Nostradamus must be right. Look, if you knew the world was going to end soon or in 10 years, or 20, or thought it was, what would you do differently. People say travel, do this, do that. No you wouldn't, life moves on, goes on, and you wouldn't do anything differently because you really couldn't. So just don't worry about it.

I think it's possible. It's just so wierd the closer we get the more things that we have never seen before are happening.

Like Al Gore's book. This is the first time as far as I know, that we have ever had to move displaced people. To higher ground, cause there land is permanently gone, or whatever.

And Gore says if we don't save the polar bear we will not be able to save ourselves.

But there are many more things going on than that! So much.

It's still a good world. Strive to be Happy!

The Mayan calendar is a ridiculous, ill-informed and superstitious document from a primative people so there is nothing in their doctrine to intelligently or scientifical determine ANYTHING.

Regardless we are heading for the end and though 2012 is possible I feel that 2040-2050 is more realistic unless a nuclear war speeds it up.
