Some people say that Dell laptops suck. Others say that Sony laptops suck. Since both of those brands have been shipped with exploding batteries, I would avoid BOTH of those.
I have owned both Gateway and Compaq. Both were great. But right now, I would recommend a Toshiba. My 2nd choice would be HP.

I have a gateway, and it really isn't that bad of a comp. hardware wise I have never had a problem with it.
but software wise, i had some virus's a few times, and i had reinstall windows once, but thats ok, i blame that on windows and the software, not the computer.
Compaq is bad because you really have to be a techy if you wanna fiddle around with the inside and upgrade it etc, its designed to be small so its hard to add hardware etc. i hate em personally.

My Gateway, which I am using now, has actually worked out very well for me. I used to have a Compaq, however, that was a piece of junk and always overheated.

every one is different....and depends what you are using it for...i have always had an hp and nothing else never had a problem it did my needs and more......
