285 hp stock.
It's a great engine, go for it. I've got a 2001 2wd with 226,000 miles, and it runs superbly and will smoke the 22s down. I have beaten a 2001 Cobra, 2006 Silverado, and a 2005 Silverado SS.
I have a K&N intake, Jet Mass air flow sensor, Flowmaster exhaust and a Hypertech programmer. All in all, it makes about 330 HP to the ground, and about 360 TQ.
I so say get it. You will not be sorry. Silverados are great trucks and very dependable.
Check mine out if you want. Give you a better idea to see what I'm talking about.

The old vortec 350's in the trucks ran about 225-240 hp and 320-335 lb/ft of torque, the 99 5.3 is 270 hp and 310 lb/ft of torque.
And, for all those above, the 350 wasnt offered in 1999, the 5.3 replaced it, just as the 4.8 replaced the old 305. The 5.3 is a great motor and easily outruns and outpulls the old 350 vortec...

"The Vortec 5300, or LM7/LM4/L59, is a V8 truck engine. It is a stroked (by 9 mm) version of the Vortec 4800 and replaced the 5700 L31 in 2003. L59 denotes a flexible fuel version, while the LM7 is a special low-emissions engine. The L33 is made for the pickup trucks."
"All Vortec 5300s are based on the new Generation III small-block V8. Unlike the all-aluminum LM4 and L59, the LM7 uses a cast iron block. The block and heads are the same as on the 4800 LR4. Power output is 285-295 hp (213-220 kW) and torque is 325-335 ft·lbf (441-447 N·m). Displacement is 5.3 L (5328 cc) from 96.01 mm bore and 92.00 mm stroke. Vortec 5300s are built in St. Catharines, Ontario, Romulus, Michigan, and Silao, Mexico. The L33 is an all aluminum block, with higher compression. This application has 310 hp and 335 ft·lbf of torque."
Stock 350's run from 185-350 hp, deopending on what it came in.

There is not a lot of difference between the two motors actually. The old 5.7L Vortec motor was a strong motor with the benefits of port fuel injection so power and performance were not a problem. The 5.3L Vortec is an updated motor with all the benefits of its predecessor. The basic difference is the overall weight of one truck to the other. Is the new one faster, it probably is as there is far less mass to the new trucks as to the old. That is probably all you can do to decide which is the truck for you. Both of these trucks have lots of aftermarket abilities to make up for any power/performance problems that you perceive.

but the 5.3 revs higher. so it's not the amount of HP at peek RPM. the 5.3 distrbute power sooner and over a longer torque curve. It would be a little faster over 1/4 times compared to stock 350 in identical bodied truck.

isnt the 5.3 like a 305 or some such ... I know the 5.7 is the small block 350 and 1999 1500 long bed would be kinda under nutted with anything less than a 350

doesn't matter when the difference in displacement is this small...the 5.3 is much more powerful. it has better throttle response too. not to rag on the ol' 350's....they are bulletproof motors...i have many of them. but 5.3 liters are very powerful too.

old school thinking, theres no replacement for displacement so the 350 is the better engine.

You have a 325 cubic inch V-8 engine. It is not a DOHC engine.
