trying to take a plane to london, then to croatia and back. but the flight times don't match and I get to stay over london between flights. Should i stay in a Gatwick hotel or should I take a taxi directly to center london and stay there? I don't want to drive, and want to make sure I stay in a safe place. It seems to be a 30 mile hike to the center city from Gatwick. Any interesting places I can visit closer to the airport?

Go into London by Gatwick Express or South Central Trains cost between 9 and 11 pounds. There are inexpensive hotels to be had in London, look at the Visit London or Visit Britain web sites for ideas. The London Tourist Board will suggest a hotel and will even book one for you.
There are some attractions at Gatwick Airport itself on the observation deck there is a cockpit of the world's first jet airliner the Comet, and a walk through fuselage of s Super Dart Herald 200 aeroplane. There are other amusements and things of interest also. It is possible to spend an interesting few hours at this airport.
Many attractions in London are free - all the museums and libraries, changing the guard happens twice a day and is a great show, a sight-seeing bus tour is inexpensive and it is possible to 'hop on and off' at places of interest. Book a ticket for a west end show, much cheaper than Broadway.
Try somewhere different - what about Brighton on the south coast a charming and historic town.

Definately get a train into the center of London, this is called the Gatwick Express, it will take about 35 minutes to arrive in central London. You should look at staying the Regent Palace which is a budget hotel (not sure what your budget is) in the heart of the tourist area of London, with all of the theaters etc on your doorstep.

All the sorrounding area outside of the Gatwick area is very nice, there is not much to see in the winter months, you could also may be go to Brighton (by train from Gatwick), which is often named London by the sea and is very cool with loads of restuarants etc if you have been to London before.

Stay in Gatwick. Cheaper and you can take a train into town when you want. The train from Gatwick is wonderful. Subways run quite late, so you can also get out back to Gatwick after a night on the town.

If you're pressed for organizaing you're own day, take a day tour. They depart from Victoria Station and cover all or part of London. They can also get you up close to things like Changing of the Guard etc.
