Find something similar to the material you hope to sing in the show - so if you're going after the Fanny Brice role, pick a Streisand like song from something else.

Pick something different.

And if you can, pick something funny. Auditions can get very serious, and judges (directors) often remember fondly people who can sing but who also made them laugh. (I speak here from long and painful experience.)

On A Clear Day was a great show Streisand was in, with some lovely music.
Jesus Christ Superstar has some great stuff - as does Cats - do you know anything from Chess?

Choose a song with a broad range and a strong character like something from "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" or from How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" both have great scores with music rarely used to Audition. I'd stay away from Grease or Cats as they have been sung to death. Break a Leg!

Auditions will have a breakdown of the requirements. Is your piece a monologue, or will you have to sing or dance? If a monologue, how long? If singing, will you need sheet music for the piano accompanist? How many songs? If a dance routine, how long?

Do you take drama classes or musical theatre? The auditions process should always be a part of your classroom training, including "grooming" you to handle auditions. Let me know exactly what you'll be doing and I will try to help.

If you're auditioning for Maureen (in Rent), I suggest Popular from Wicked.

It has the same fun element as Over The Moon. It also gives you chance to be all crazy on stage which shows everyone how versatile you are as an actress.

Choose something in your vocal range and in a similar musical style as "Funny Girl" or "Rent" to give the directors an idea of how you would handle that particular type of show. You could do a Rodgers and Hammerstein tune or an early Sondheim tune for "Funny Girl." Any recent Broadway hit with pop, rock, and R&B style songs would work for the "Rent " audition. Break a leg!

It really depends on your vocal range and style...you should really try to find broadway songs on the internet..that should be your homework..here is some good auditioning songs..that I know:
Dont rain on my parade- Funny Girl (mezzo w/ range or soprano:belting)
What I did For Love- Chorus Line (Mezzo w/ range or soprano)
As Long as He Needs Me- Oliver (soprano)
Cant Help Lovin Dat Man-Showboat (soprano)
Bail Hai- South Pacific (Soprano..opperatic)
All That Jazz-Chicago (Mezzo w/ range..belt)

I hope these few are helpful...

Anything Goes has some great pieces--Reno Sweeny is the main female and she's got some amusing songs that will give you some good places for poses and flourishes. Once Upon a Mattress is another good one, Lady Larkin (I believe) has a nice solo about her man leaving her--it's another comedy. Music Man and My Fair Lady might give you some more options.

Look for a piece from a popular show...anything that the judges don't know would be a downfall. That's my only tip

Oh My Gawd.... you're not seriously considering auditioning for a musical are you?

I loathe musicals... almost as much as I loathe people who keep dogs.
