Being gay is most likely genetic, just like being left-handed. A "bad family" or molestation have nothing to do with it. Homosexuality exists throughout the animal kingdom and is simply a normal variation.
Some say they know even as very small children, so 13 isn't exactly shocking. Many people become sexually attracted about then, and whatever way you are wired is often obvious then.

You usually find out you're gay within a year or two after puberty, so if you went through puberty early for your gender, than that could easily explain it. Also people dont turn gay from being molested, we're all born gay/bi/lesbian/straight/asexual, it just depends on how your stem cells developed before birth

Being attracted to someone of the same sex as yourself does not result from being molested as a child or being raised in a "bad" family. (bad being subjective here as what one person might consider bad, i.e drunken father vs strict father, absent mother vs drug using mother, varies from person to person) Although many children who are abused as children do grow up to abuse children in turn, this has nothing to do with sexuality, but with dominance and control. I agree that the 10 percent figure is the one most commonly quoted and trying to explain why you have an attraction to the same sex is like trying to explain to the wind why it blows. The wind has a better idea of why it blows than I will ever have. Being gay is not the end of civilization as we know it, I tend to believe that it is another expression of the human condition, which is also reflected in animal species that don;t have written rules of engagement.

I have been told that about 10 percent of the general population are homosexual. And I have been told that about 10 percent of the general population are left-handed (not necessarily the same 10 percent, understand!). I kind of doubt these phenomena will ever be explained in a way that could fit into a Yahoo Answers answer. Just be glad you're part of a special group (or maybe you are left-handed, too?).

People who do not know or understand gay people will try to find a reason that caused someone else to be gay because it is easier for them to think that something must have happened to cause them to be gay instead of them being born that way. When they make these statements, they are placing the so called 'burden of proof' on you so they can disassociate themselves from having to put much thought into the matter.
The only way to change their minds is to educate them.

Um, born gay.
Homosexuality isn't a disease, nor is it caused by anything we can determine right now. Your parents didn't do anything wrong, and abuse has nothing to do with what your preferences are.
Good for you, though, at figuring it out as early as you did.

There seem to be many reasons why one can be gay... don't fret... just accept it and venture forth... you may actually discover you are not... but then again you may find that you are. Either way it is just YOU.
