I want to burn some video on my new iMac. I'm trying to choose between -R and +R. One is 1x/2x and the other is 2x/4x, whatever that means, but same price.

-r +r either can be used it only stands for the polarity of the dvd burners now days can do either the old ones could only do one or the other as for the rw that means its a re-writable dvd means you can erase it and burn to it again.

Not much info on what -R and +R are but they both work. I don't know why people would think R/W stand for "read/ write" but it means re-writable; so you can use it more than once. The speed of the disk (the 2x and 4x) doesn't seem to matter but you might have to decrease the speed on the drive to prevent data corruption. I don't know much about Macs, I have an IBM myself, but your program should have a setting for changing drive speed. If you plan on playing the disk in a DVD player you will have to also put the formating programs on the disk, this should be done automaticaly by your burning program (this dose take up about 1/4 of the disk, you will need dual-layer disks for copying movies). Have fun

+R or +RW = the system uses phase shifting, so is a bit more stable and long lived.

-R or -RW = simply reads the dimple. Some aging or even exposure in a closed car, or to sunlight, could deform the dimple that denotes a "1" from a "0".

The RW means re-writable.

these are different formats (just like blue ray and HD) R=write only and RW=read and write (RW is also either = or +)
the reader must also have the software to read either - or +, but will read either R or RW

- R are format of disk
+ R are format of disk
RW rewritable you can write over what is already written on it
you need to find the one that is compatible with your computer, both the -R and +R will work.

best to choice R/W CDs; that stands for read and the write. That way you can read from the CD and then you can also write on the CD.
