Why is the January 1st at this time of a year

Prior to the middle ages, new years day was celebrated on various days such as Dec 25, Dec 21, and Mar 21. Gregory standardized this with the Gregorian calendar in 1582.
This is why some months of the year are named according to their position in the old calandar which began in march. Thus, October (the eigth month), November (the ninth month), etc.
