Can anyone tell me the best cleaner for a headstone? I think it's granite but I'm not sure. Can it be polished after I clean it with some kind of paste wax to make it easier to clean next time?

Here's a website that is helpful. It has tips for all types of headstones. It would be helpful if you could find out for sure what the material is. It's as easy as calling the maker of the tombstone or possibly asking someone else that regularly visits the same cemetary and knows. Have a lovely day!

If it's not the smmoth finish kind baking soda works I don't see why it would hurt the smooth finish either even though I have never tried it. You can try linseed oil to protect it if it's the rough surface but you can also get a sealant put on it or maybe they can sell it to you to put on it from any place that makes tombstones or specialty signs from concrete or granite style stuff. If it's reaaly old don't use anything to abrasive or it can remove the script. Good Luck post what works for you when you choose an answer I am sure you are not the only with this question.

Granite is used for most all monuments and markers today. Soap, water and agood brush will do the job. The granite finish is polished and then the names are engraved.
Some granite appears to be dull and not polished. That is a special process and is called "steeled".
I have seen granite power washed and it can do a pretty good job. If the engraving has 'color' in it (reds, blues etc) do not use Windex as it will destroy the color process.
