I am a Licensed Funeral Director/Embalmer and have asked many other Funeral Directors/Embalmers about this. No one I know has ever seen a body sit up. It would take a lot of energy or gas to move a body to sit up, which makes it very unlikely. It is true that bodies can move slightly due to gas, but even that is usually released by an outside force such as moving the body. The biggest factor that plays in is rigormortis. This is a stiffening of the muscles when the body starts to break down. During this time if the body is in the fetal posistion it could appear that the body sat up.

I studied Mortuary Science to be a Mortician... and yes the cadaver meaning dead body can move or even make sounds. Gas, Air expressing even a moan. I personally haven't seen any one sit up but i have seen a hand move and someone cry! (weep) my own mother, That's because the body from the moment it dies is decomposing. So thing's start to move. I did not become a mortician after seeing my first infant death, They (morticians) are special people Life is to be lived, And never fear the dead.

Gather 'round for a story children...
When I was working as an Orderly, we had to take the dead bodies to the mortuary. Picture this - it's 2 o'clock in the morning, I'm by myself in the 'old' part of the hospital, I move the body... and it sighs! I jumped about three feet back and just stood there for ages. Then I poked the body with a ruler until I was sure it was dead. Since then I found out that yes, dead bodies can sigh, twitch, open their eyes, and in rare cases sit up. And yes, it all freaks me out.
And yes, when it happens you just push them back down.

yes. It is freaky as hell. It is just as the guy said. Gasses and such are released through the body causing involentary muscle spasms. Muscles move as they were created and can cause the body to sit up or lift an arm, what have ya'.
No doubt this same process happened back in superstitious days to feed the need of mysticism and renew gossip stories out of the women who prepared the bodies for burial.
But this of course hapopens before rigor mortis sets in and the body becomes rigid and stiff and unable to move.

My husbands whole family are morticians and my husband was studying to be one but changed his mind. He was only doing it to please his Dad.
Yes, I have heard all the stories. It is true a person can be dead and still move. Certain reflexes are still present. What he is telling you is slightly true he is just exagerating the story a bit. Probably to get your attention. All bodies are capable of reacting the same way when you die.
The soul leaves the body and then the body is useless. Our souls move on to the Other Side. You will not see dead bodies walking around, it does not happen. And since you dont plan to be a mortician it should not disturb you. When I die I want to be tossed in the incinerator and burned. I dont want anyone to cry for me and I prefer they have a party. And if I happen to be embalmed instead I will probably punch the mortician in the eye first.

NO, THAT IS NOT TRUE. BODIES DO NOT EVER, EVER SIT UP! I have been a mortician for some years now, having embalmed more than 4,000 bodies. NONE of them have sat up. That is an urban legend to scare people, don't let anyone tell you any different.

Sometimes the legs lift as the body gases build up in the intestines.
When I die, cremate me. Toss my ashes into any flowing river for they all lead to the ocean. Let me play with the dolphins, ride in on the fury of a hurricane, or just settle to the bottom of the ocean and watch sea life undisturbed.
Cremation. It's clean, quick, and no sad visits to a cemetary on dark and lonely days.

Yes.
My mother in law was a nurse taking a hospice patient who had passed down to the morgue on an elevator when it sat up. The check-in guy told her he heard her (scream) when it happened. I think this is kinda funny.
Electric pulses can make a dead body twitch and move around, too.

Yes. There are also occasions whre the release of the gassers inside the body passes across the bocal chords as the gas is releaseed from the throat and a sound similar to a groan can be heard. the processes of rigor mortis and decomposition can cause some unusual phenomea and for the unprepared it can be unnerving.

It happens all the time. Once I attended a cremation of one of my relatives and he was laid on the funeral pyre. In the middle the dead body got up and a couple of elders forced him back with bamboo sticks. I learn later than due to the fire the dead body's veins get tight and it may seem that the body is trying to get up.
